DJ Buhle started playing with the BFR Crew in 2004, from there she has never looked back as her musical journey, style and interpretation continues to make revellers take to the dance floor in numbers. She is versatile and can curate sets that comprise of deep house, broken beats, soul and house. Her skills and music selection tell a story which takes people on a musical journey which has seen her play across the country alongside some of the industry’s heavyweights.

DJ Buhle’s style of play has seen her mixes feature on influential podcasts, TV shows and some of the biggest radio stations in South Africa. DJ Buhle has played an instrumental role in the growth of deep house in Soweto, all this is credited to her involvement in various movements and events. DJ Buhle has played at events and festivals such as The Low Down, Deep Town Jozi, Slushy Fest, Oppikoppi, Truth, False Start, The Warehouse sessions. Plus, in 2018 she was a nominee in the ‘Best Deep House Female DJ’ category for DMASA and she was also feature in Pulse Magazine’s top 20 females who are making waves.

Biography:

Fresh from making the album of the month for the month of November on Apple Music Africa and making the top 100 albums on Apple Music in 2021 for his 4th album Muse, Cape Town-born, Joburg-based DJ/producer Thando Tshoma aka Jazzuelle was once labelled “South Africa’s Best Kept Secret” by South Africa’s IDM Mag, since then, a few years ago he’s meteoric rise in the underground scene has been a gentle storm.
While South Africa has the biggest house music market on the planet, the appetite for more leftfield abstractions is in its infancy – but it’s with this broader perspective that Jazzuelle flourishes. His deeper and cerebral approach to production has garnered him an international following that includes the likes of Chris Brann (Wamdue Kids / Ananda Project), Dixon, Osunlade, M.A.N.D.Y, Mano Le Tough and DJ T, to name a few.

It’s also scored him releases on a plethora of labels, from Martin Iveson’s Atjazz Record Company and Fred Everything’s Lazy Days Recordings to Germany’s giants; Get Physical Music and more as well as local powerhouse imprints like the pioneering House Afrika  Records and Stay True Sounds to name a few. It’s also attracted column inches in publications like DJ Mag, Mixmag, Apple Music Africa,  Spotify, Attack  Magazine, and the editorial pages on Beatport and Traxsource.

Jazzuelle’s interest in dance music was sparked by kwaito (South African Slowed Down House Beats)– his cousins would crank out the nascent SA sounds of the likes of Mashamplani and Trompies on cassette in the ‘90s. But being a naturally curious loner, he gravitated to the faster, rave and techno sounds being played on stations like 5FM and at clubs like Dockside.

Interested in exploring electronic music, he then discovered the experimental electronics of Brian Eno’s ambient albums and Aphex Twin – fascinations that gave his future music a unique edge. He started DJing in his teens and taught himself Fruity Loops by watching YouTube videos.

With a little help from Capetonian talents and pioneering DJ’s Erefaan Pearce, Cassiem Latief and Leighton Moody, he began honing his craft and learning the history of house music. Then, motivated by local house legend Vinny Da Vinci, he moved up to Jo’burg. Vinny’s support was crucial – before Jazzuelle had even released a song, he was being featured in mixes on his Metro FM Urban Beat show, which wa the countries biggest show back then, the wild reactions and hype on social media sparked Thando’s ambition.

Chris Brann was so enthused that he commissioned a remix, then jumped on a plane to South Africa from the USA to take the young producer under his wing. Self-released tracks followed, but bigger interests soon came calling – as did the Red Bull Music Academy in 2013. ‘The experience I gained was life-changing,’ he says about the experience. ‘It was a nod from the universe that I hadn’t made a mistake.’ This tenure also led to gigs at Sonar, a Beatport Wet Deck debut booking at W Hotel alongside Noir, Nakadia and Claptone and he also performed at Glastonbury’s Silver Heyes stage

Fast forward to 2017, his ‘Circles’ album – which included collaborations with Da Capo, Charles Webster, Matthias Vogt, Card on Spokes, Fred Everything, and Lars Behrenroth with Tamara Dey – was released internationally by Germany’s Get Physical, and locally by House Afrika. In 2019, he headlined a Boiler Room gig in Cape Town – the most consequential booking of his life until then.

The benevolence and his brilliance has resulted in numerous accolades. he was nominated for the Best Producer Award and Best Album award at the South African Dance Music Awards, and he also won Best Underground Record of the Year for his smash ‘Forget Me’ ft. The Lazarusman
