Title cut ZUG UM ZUG clearly tags the legacy, developing from rather humble beginnings, with just a few drone pads and a straight bass drum to show for - but that's all SASCHA FUNKE needs to establish a rather complex atmosphere. Added percussion and the introduction of sparse piano chords venture further into the eerily calm vortex at the heart of this track, making for a formidable, yet exitingly ambiguous listening experience.

(en)Hearing WEVAL's music for the very first time, you might wonder from what geniuses' vault of vintage milestones these sounds have been pulled: the Dutch duo's incredibly catchy arrangements seem perfused by a rarefied pop magic that only a chosen few have truly mastered. Surely, this must be the work of a well- established veteran – or two youngsters so massively talented that it borders on the obscene. Weval's EASIER EP is here to demonstrate that it wasn't an accident, either - with four epic cuts that will haunt you long after you've left the floor.

The 2013 debut "Half Age EP" from Dutch newcomers Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers aka WEVAL struck a perfect balance between ingenuous simplicity and warm melodies: a rare moment of rapture and certainly one of those records that you wish you would've released yourself – which is probably why we smuggled an exclusive Weval track onto the tracklist of our much-acclaimed "Total 14" compilation (KOMPAKT 310 CD 118). There, the duo's dreamy, yet dynamic variant of slow-burning, sweeping house held up more than well with the other high caliber names present on the record - leading us directly to the phenomenal outing at hand.

With its glistening melodies and rousing beats, WEVAL's EASIER EP displays a staggering sense for danceable drama - spread over four expertly crafted tracks that will speak to your hearts and feet through radiant synths, ardent vocal snippets and sublime melodies. From pawing opener GIMME SOME to synth power ballad ONE, the introspective THINKING OF and title anthem EASIER, this is a rather beautifully flowing listening experience, not at all betraying the slightly yeasty circumstances of its creation: "we made this EP in two totally different moods", the producers explain, "we were both totally in love with two different girls, but for both of us it didn't work out – and to be clear, this was not our choice."

However, the defeat led to a phase of high productivity and research: "we felt terrible but we had a new EP we could work on and spend days and days finding a new sound." A couple of months and gear updates later, "the winter was gone and surprisingly it all worked out with those girls." Suddenly flush with happy feelings, Harm and Merijn finally hit the stride and quickly wrapped up production – resulting in an impactful wealth of emotions permeating all four tracks: "you can almost hear these two different moods we were in – it gets from cool, euphoric to dramatic and intense at the end."

Sicherlich ist dies das Werk eines wohlbekannten Elektronik-Veteranen - oder das von zwei jungen Newcomern die so massiv talentiert sind, daß es fast obszön ist. Wevals EASIER EP belegt außerdem daß es sich nicht um einen Zufall handelte - dank vier epischen Tracks die einem noch lange nach der Party in den Ohren hängen.

Dort bewegte sich der verträumt-dynamische Stil des Duos - köchelnder, mitreißender House - auf Augenhöhe mit den anderen hochkalibrigen Namen der Platte… was uns direkt zum vorliegenden, phänomenalen Release bringt.

Mit glitzernden Melodien und aufrührerischen Beats beweist WEVALs EASIER EP einen verblüffenden Sinn fürs tanzbare Drama - verteilt über vier meisterhaft verfugte Nummern, die mit strahlenden Synthesizern, engagierten Vocals und sublimen Melodien zu Herzen und Füßen gleichermaßen sprechen. Vom hufscharrenden Opener GIMME SOME zur Synth-Powerballade ONE, dem introspektiven THINKING OF und der TItelhymne EASIER entpuppt sich der Flow als überaus gelungen - zu keinem Zeitpunkt verraten sich hier die einigermaßen veflixten Umstände der Produktion: "wir haben diese EP in zwei völlig verschiedenen Stimmungen gemacht", erklären die Produzenten, "wir waren beide völlig verknallt in zwei verschiedene Mädchen, doch für keinen von uns schien das gut auszugehen - und das war nicht unsere eigene Entscheidung, um ganz deutlch sein."

Wie dem auch sei, die Niederlage führte geradewegs in eine Phase großer Produktivität und intensiver Klangforschung: "wir fühlten uns furchtbar, doch wir hatten ja eine neue EP zu produzieren und konnten uns über Tage hinweg in neuen Sounds verlieren." Ein paar Monate und Equipment-Updates später "war der Winter vorbei und überraschenderweise funktionierte es jetzt auch mit den Mädchen." Plötzlich vom guten Gefühl umgeben, fanden Harm und Merijn schnell ihren Rhythmus und konnten die Produktion zum Abschluß bringen - resultierend in einem eindrucksvollen Reichtum an Emotionen, der alle vier Tracks durchdringt: "man kann diese zwei verschiedenen Stimmungen in denen wir uns befanden tatsächlich hören - es geht von cool, euporisch zu dramatisch und intensiv am Ende."

Musicians like Rutger Zuydervelt have a special relationship with presets - sounds, rhythms and samples that are inbuilt to keyboards or synthesizers. Presets are the opposite of individualism in music, they are commodities, sounds off the peg. Self-respecting musicians never use them, or perhaps use them precisely because they shouldn't. Zuydervelt aka Machinefabriek is a master of self-made sound and time-stretching, sensitively handling organic recordings and samples on countless releases, and regards preset sounds in an organ or a cheap keyboard as a tonal find, as a part of the cacophony of every day life. He uses the chugging of a Bontempi rhythm box or preset strings like field recordings, with the same calm and matter-of-factness as the murmur of ventilation or the hum of a refrigerator.
These Bontempi-rhythms plus the computer-stretched sounds of saxophone (Espen Reinertsen) and voice (Mariska Baars) are the base elements of Vergezicht 1 & 2. It is stunning how Zuydervelt manages to produce depth and meditative calm with this supposedly soulless material. Never-ending expanses and the mechanic rhythms overlap and start shifting, slowly and imperceptibly before the beat gets nervous, starts to stumble to finally come to a standstill with the slowly swelling bass. The track is held in suspense, rattling and rustling. Ghostly squeaking breezes in, then another stop with a soft beat of the drum. Slowly, the track builds itself up again with filtered grooves and prolonged notes.
On Vergezicht 2, the Bontempi-rhythm sets in again, after seven minutes of rising and subsiding expanses and the breezy, ethereal soprano, this time slowed down alongside warm basses and single notes from the piano. Then a momentary halt, almost too beautiful and too clean for this track. Soon an ominous siren call floats above the euphony and restores order by friction. This subtle irritation is part of a complete acoustic pattern. It is not possible to imagine Machinefabriek's music without the irritiating moment, the doubt turned into sound.
The Dutch word 'Vergezicht' means view or panorama. And it is a wide acoustic panorama opened by Zuydervelt here that reveal presets in new light.
