Vitess joins the Shall Not Fade family with a vibrant contribution to our Season Series. Retroactive City sees the Parisian talent helm the uplifting house sound for which his prolific live sets have become known.

Easing us in is the down-tempo slow burner ‘Cockpit’ with synth arpeggios that bubble playfully on the surface of layered ambience and a modest two-step rhythm. The next two tracks take things up a notch with funk-infused melodies (​​'Fantasia’) and old school Robin S-esque organ samples which make for a fiercely modern take on a classic deep house sound (‘Popeye’). Flip to the B side and thumping floor-fillers ‘No Dancing’ and ‘Ratz’ maintain the pace before ‘Grand Turismo’ switches things up completely. Jungle drums rattle under luscious pads before mutating into 4X4 to make the perfect closer - both to the EP and to any DJ set.

Hailing from Utrecht, DJ and producer Locklead is known for his stand out house material via Slapfunk, Dungeon Meat and Pleasure Zone with support from Raresh, Enzo Siragusa, Djebali, Varhat, Janeret and more. Following his debut album ‘Square One’ on Chris Stussy’s Up The Stuss, the Dutchman now joins the Dark Side Of The Sun family with his latest EP ‘Era’ with French maestro Sweely and label-founder Van Dijk on remix duties. House masterclass ‘Era’ kicks off the EP as eerie sonics ride a groove-laden beat guided by anthemic keys and subtle bleeps, while the aptly-titled, bass-heavy ‘Friki’ gets down with driving low-ends and tripped-out vocals. ‘Initiate Robot’ is a peak-time affair boasting heavy synth work and enchanting harmonies over deep tones. Next up, Sweely serves up a pacy, cosmic rework of title track ‘Era’, peppered with galactic samples and spiralling electronics, before Luuk Van Dijk’s stripped-back reshape of ‘Friki’ fuses snappy percussion and sweeping chords.

PREMIERE: Mutant People - Bridge Muse (Amir Alexander's Deep Down Beat Down) [State Of Flow]

Khidja is a Romanian duo focussed on fusion. They met at high school in Germany and since then have soaked up sounds from all over the world, as well as from their Romanian homeland. From jazz to gypsy music, traditional instrumentation to techno, they skip between genres and generations with ease. Mixing up synths and cult instruments like the setar or ney, their organic soundscapes have come on labels like Hiven Discs and [Emotional] Especial and always add up to intoxicating and esoteric trips. 

Across the course of 90 minutes for us, they lay all that bare. It’s a punk minded session that journeys through sci-fi noise, freaky disco and no wave sounds with real intensity, building to dense peaks before dissipating and sinking down into a slithering groove. Bold and adventurous, Khidja explore the roots and peripheries of electronic music in brilliantly beguiling fashion.

Though she came up in London, @danielle_dj embodies the cutting edge electronic sound of her hometown of Bristol. She traverses styles and tempos with a boundary blurring vision that makes each and every selection a surprise. She credits the freedom that comes with years of playing warm up sets as having given her the confidence to play it weird, and has kept that MO now she has become a headliner in her own right. Of course, her NTS shows are always eye-opening affairs for the same reason. 

Given where she lives, a certain bass weight will always underpin a Danielle set, and this week's podcast is no different. In 75 minutes she plots a line from sparse and atmospheric rhythmic pulses to full throttle jungle-referencing rave. Along the way she finds a perfect sweet spot between head wrecking experimental tracks, futurist breaks and universally appealing techno that manages to be both muscular yet refined. It makes for quite the thrill.

For Kurt Baggaley AKA Scape One it all started way back in 1983 after an appearance on BBC Television performing Robot Dancing to Africa Bambaataa’s "Planet Rock", he then became resolute to begin producing and writing Electro music, mainly concentrating on live performances within the local Hip Hop & Dance scenes along the UK’s South Coast which remained continuous on into the nineties.
With the advent of the new generation of contemporary Electro producers in the mid-nineties which helped re-start the Electro movement, Kurt joined in production duties with neighbouring associates Transparent Sound, with this collaboration came several releases on various labels, most noticeably 'Freaks Frequency'.
As an independent producer Kurt has gone on to generate more material recording for various esteemed underground Electro labels in Europe, The UK and The USA. In 2001 ‘Simple Machines’ was one of the first releases that made the name ‘Scape One’ perceptible on the Electro landscape followed soon after by the series ‘Planet Funk Express’ which focused on the global development and diversity of Electro and 'Submolecularnanotechrythmicpriciples' showing a more deeper and experimental edge. Many more releases followed each focusing on a certain theme but always with the pulse of Synthetic funk with a futuristic attitude that always remains forward thinking. Live appearances and DJ sets have taken place in New York, London, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Chicago, Glasgow, Miami, Dublin, Seattle, Leipzig and many more including various Radio performances.
In recent years Kurt has evolved his productions into a more personalized and unique sound, taking in influences from early 80's Chicago House, Detroit Techno, New York Club with a fusion of Italo Disco, Minimal Wave and Electro. With releases on SoHaSo, Chapter 24, HotMix, 
Kurt also writes under guise of Tau Sagittarii for his Ambient Experimental compositions, described as 'Sensory data for hypersleep chambers'.
However the element of pure electro will always be at the core of Scape One's productions and the journey continues with many new releases lined up for 2021.
