We’re so excited to bring you four absolutely stellar tracks from fellow Merky Boy himself; Spiff. 

If you’re not yet aware of the artist formerly known as Spiffy B, or if you already are well versed in such lore, this is Spiff as you’ve never seen him before. Showing the true range and versatility of his production, Hieraphant opens with its title track, an uplifting and infectious 140 breaks wonderland that blossoms like a warm summers day and drops into a euphoric dance floor.

It just wouldn’t be Spiff without some absolute violence, however, amply provided by track two; Seraph. Again offering plenty in the way of uplifting power and energy, the first drop gives way to rolling 4 to the floor drums and syncopated pads that feel both relaxing and energetic — we know that doesn’t make sense you’ll just have to take our word for it.

The B side takes a distinctly darker turn as we leave the light of day and enter the world below. Stalactite, the first track fills the mind with images of cavernous spaces masking dark corners, and of far off voices calling in the void. Its brother; Stalagmite is the release of all that tension, as the ground starts to shudder and crack beneath you, drums in the deep awaken you to the peril at hand. The thundering of the breakbeats is like some great monster rising from the earth.

This EP is a journey, we can’t stress that enough. It’s been a long time coming but we are absolutely stoked for Spiff that it’s finally here and it makes finally getting to share it with you all even sweeter. We hope this is the start of a renewed and refreshed Mercurial, and we truly believe it is, but for now we’re just glad to be doing what we set out 4 years ago in a back garden to do.

For the fourth presentation of club-centric sonics through our young sublabel, we set out in search of a new addition to our roster that would surely raise the bar. The timing aligned perfectly with our introduction to TRAKA, a team consisting of three producers and a visual artist. Brought together by Belgrade’s niche underground music and graffiti scenes, their story resonated with ours - a group of friends seeking expression through multiple mediums, surrounded by the chaos of urbanism.

Although relatively new to our ecosystem, TRAKA have been making heavy waves in a short span of time. Within the last three years, they collaborated with heavyweight vocalists like Killa P and Warrior Queen, were remixed by the legendary Commodo, and had songs appear on various radio shows and DJ sets across the globe. Their A/V projects on accomplished label Yuku have established their sound, lying comfortably between modern bass elements and foundational club music. They are unafraid to push a sense of aggression on the floor, while still honing pristine production tactics to create a unique yet recognizable style. This can be heard throughout “DMSAT EP” - a showcase of their standard formula devoted to be more club-accessible.

“DMSAT EP” not only pushes TRAKA to excel in the club music sphere, but also welcomes both familiar and fresh ideas to our imprint. Utilizing hardware to achieve a sense of analog grittiness is something we have advocated throughout our catalog. The newer concepts come with the slower tempo in “47000” and “XE,” which bring forth a heavy, almost experimental hip-hop factor to the equation. Their basslines are punishing, while the vocal sampling blends perfectly with sluggish yet rowdy percussion. “A” serves as a summary of the overall feel to the EP, recruiting another Belgrade-based up-and-comer Praktikal for support. “Rolando” is an ode to the flagship Roland TR drum machines used throughout the project. Its drum work is playful, yet ends up contributing to the peak in energy. “Jungle Machete Fever” builds on this with high-octane breakbeats and rattling bass, a track that has already seen playtime on dancefloors around the world.

Purely influenced by the movement of urban environments, TRAKA have cemented their sonic capabilities with a compelling collection of club-ready tracks. Through a newfound burst of inspiration through the medium of dance, they are swiftly becoming a force to reckon with. Their affirming rise to the spotlight is both exciting and well-deserved, one that we felt would fit well with our label’s mission.

Satellite Trax: an expansion of our core imprint that focuses on dance-centric music and its club roots; part of the foundation within our sonic heritage. This sublabel serves as a primary source of dancefloor weaponry for DJs and enthusiasts aiming to unveil the latest rhythms heard from around the electronic music sphere.

This is ‘Altair’, a collection of kaleidoscopic post-breakcore from veteran french surrealist Ruby My Dear.

The lights are out and a strange alien force surrounds the periphery of your hearing.. The sound of a haunting music box flickering in the darkness draws you closer but as you begin to approach everything explodes into dank crossbreed DnB rhythms that punch you in the gut and send you flying. As the bombardment of breaks momentarily subside you realise you’ve been beamed aboard the mothership and are now surrounded by unknown and indescribable visions. 

You are given a brief moment to contemplate before your legs are swept from underneath you by a flurry of amens that would fry the minds of the hungriest of junglis’ epicures. Journeying deeper into the heart of the beast you become aware of distant and immense rumbles but are stopped in your tracks by grinding brutal machinery rising up on all sides. As quickly as it appeared it starts to collapse and you are plunged into near darkness once again. 

Pulses of light slowly begin to stab rhythmically from behind clouds and you feel yourself begin to move faster and faster through a void that is now streaked by a spectrum of colour. Floating debris starts re-arranging around you at light speed and every fibre of your being is simultaneously stimulated with needle-like accuracy. As the last string plucks play out the darkness falls away and the cover artwork comes back into focus. You immediately leave wherever you are and encourage someone else to experience this music.
