As the pandemic restrictions are set to ease soon in the UK and we finally had some hot weather, I was getting nostalgic for the feeling of playing outdoors at festivals and excited about the prospect of being able to do it again soon. My manager Jonny and I decided to set up an impromptu festival stage in the courtyard here at the studio in Brighton, so I could play some tunes and create a virtual festival experience for you!

Brighton-based DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Alex Banks is one of electronic music’s most forward-thinking underground stars. Once a devoted metal-head during his teenage years, Banks’ life changed when he attended his very first rave and had his eyes (and ears) opened to the world of dance music. Since then, the DJ has spent the last 10 years honing his craft, pushing back against the more sterile elements of the dance scene with his perfectly-imperfect productions. “This artwork generated by Midjourney’s AI. After I finished the set I started to listen the recording again. At the moment I created the keywords of some emotions and objects which reaches to my mind. While I was listening the set, I felt myself in microcosmos of the macro universe. So then I imagined human cells which are made from Nebulae and here is the result."

Finnish-Swiss duo Henrik Blomfelt and Gaspar Narby take the reins on this month's Mesh mix. 

Meeting on the dance floor in Peckham, London they attributed their love for electronic sounds that fused a group with a penchant for uplifting atmospheric melodic beats and hypnotic tones. We will leave you to experience some epic breakbeat escapism today and unreleased edits from the group.

About
Throughout his critically acclaimed fifteen-year career, London-based producer Ryan Lee West has reinvented himself with each lauded release. His work is bound, however, by his increasing drive to humanize sound. His music has evolved from his challenging early electronic output to more conceptual and metamorphic sonic theses, such as 2020’s ‘Articulation’ and last year’s ‘Overflow’- an emotional exploration of technological advance’s consequences to human nature. 2022 saw his much-awaited return with his eighth release via Erased Tapes, titled ‘Now Is’.

Rival Consoles - Live at Le Guess Who? 2022

I've been listening to Essential mixes since I first started getting into clubs and electronic music, so it was a shock, and exciting for me, to get the offer to make one myself. The two hour format really allows some time to explore ideas musically as well.

So bringing everything together, I decided to try and make it an exploration of everything that has made me so obsessed with electronic music for the last 20 years, with some of my favourite records from the mid 90's, unreleased material from my favourite artists like Nils Frahm, Lusine, Tim Hecker and Rob Clouth, and a range of genres from ambient to 90 bpm electronica, house and techno, all the way up to 170bpm glitched jungle mayhem - I thought, why not have some fun with it!?

So it's certainly not a normal club mix, it's just what I think is the best music out there, without worrying about what genre or box any particular track fits into or how things should be done "properly". I wanted to leave some sections quite ambient as well, to give breathing space between the peaks, so I'm happy to be able to post this new version up, minus the broadcast talking and idents.

Essential Mix - Max Cooper - No Voice Overs

Anders Trentemøller is one of those artists that can live up to the description of "trademark sound". Since his poll-bothering debut release in 2006 ('The Last Resort'), the Copenhagen based musician has been drawing on his love of 80s/ 90s indie and using that distinctive personal motif on his intricate electronic productions. After pioneering his own full live show he has now notched up over 300 appearances, and still found time to get to his fourth studio album. 'Fixion' was released earlier this year and sees him refine his sound, and yet add some organicity and more traditional song structure to the release. As he comes to the end of a sold-out tour, Anders has provided us with a delicate and ghostly mix for the start of your week and gives us some brief answers to some nosey questions.

Voltereta [Feli Navarro] originally from Barecelona, is based in the south of Spain in Cadiz, he creates and explores fields of electronic music, digital art and performance. His formative years were spent studying at the Music Technology Group in Barcelona followed by performing at La Biennale di Venezia with the Galata Electroacoustic Orchestra. He is currently a researcher and collaborator at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona)
 
Being a lover of thorough production, Voltereta brings the potency of melodic techno together with the depth of ambient and sound art, crafting a fluid and eclectic style of dense atmospheres that invite dancing and introspection. After ’Castigo Al Mar’ (Traum Schallplatten, 2015) and his EP ’Cabezas Bien Altas’ (Sr. Nadie Subcultura Recordings, 2016) he focused on creating visuals, collaborations with other artists and, step by step, recording his new album ‘Nubla’ (Làdeli Editions, 2020).
 
Due to his fascination with the evocativeness of electronic music, the narrative component always plays an important role in his releases. Memory and dreams, the dialogue between digital technology and nature, the ideas of dystopia and utopia or the meaning of home, have played a role in shaping his discography.
 
The artwork was chosen by the artist, some words below:
"Some months ago I commissioned the artwork for my new album Nubla to Rob Clouth. We ended up having a collection of really nice computer-generated artworks made with a custom software developed by Rob. I've chosen this one because I think it represents how the mix goes, something that looks organic but it's been digitally generated, that can resemble a peaceful picture taken in nature but it also contains darkness and some sort of void and uncertainty"

Mesh; the name brings to mind an underlying foundation, a wire frame for a crafted piece of art to ensure structural integrity. It’s an apt name for multimedia artist Max Cooper’s electronic imprint, where the MO is clattering rhythms and voluminous ambient vistas; sound as a vehicle for big ideas. Cooper’s exclusive Bleep mix celebrates the achievements of Mesh with a collection of works from their discography, featuring the ambient swells of Rob Clouth and some especially crisp breakbeat re-alignments from the likes of Reid Willis and Synkro.
