Touching on subcultural strains from the UK, US, and beyond, ALEPH’s music rejects algorithmic uniformity for weirder iterations of sound, rewiring familiar styles into new, vital forms. An antidote to the genre-boundaries of mainroom dance music, his productions eschew the flatline and inject a supercharged voltage into the club.

‘ENV_petals’ opens with glistening glass bowls and shimmering waves that make way for floating liquid DnB drums to spiral around the centre. ‘TWO FOLD’ jumps into a shuffling groove that weaves its way through a sea of melancholic bells and vocal fragments. ‘RECALL’ is a glitched out cut of machine funked garage. ‘SCREENBURN’ leans into a robotic strain of arpeggiated electro driven forwards by a moody metallic groove. Rounding things off, ‘CRUSH’ plays out like a classic dose of footwork that’s been dragged through a glassblower and come out the other side as something more abstract.

Adopted Bristolian Kayla Painter connects us (Mesh) to sound on this months series, which is also the name of her aptly titled radio show on Giles Petersons' World Wide Fm. Kayla brings us an hour long demonstration of her innovative and experimental palette ranging all the way from mid-paced downtempo bass stompers, bouncy jovial electro to warping melodic IDM productions with also some firm original works from her own projects. Big thanks to Kayla for contributing to the series.

"The cover for this mix was a collaboration between myself and my longstanding visual artist, Jason Baker.  We work closely together on creating a unique audio visual world with my live show, and this carries across to artwork too.  I wanted to reflect the detail in some of the tracks I’ve chosen for this mix in the artwork, which we did by choosing the texture of the landscape.  The artwork is an extension of the visual world we create, which explores lost futures through recontextualising objects and spaces that feel familiar."

The mix extracts highlights from Kinn's debut album, Anamnesis Landscape, and expands on his favoured themes and aesthetics of the macabre, presented at times with a tongue in cheek “Dread turned up all the way to 11” fashion.

Using extracts of dialogue, these fragmented conversations evoke a subjective narrative, each monologue lingers in the imagination of the listener as they are juxtaposed or mirrored by the brooding drones and fleeting moments of respite. Thanks again to Kinn for contributing to this months series.

"Jack Aldridge (who took the photo) is one of my oldest friends, someone I haven’t seen in person in a very long time due to the pandemic. For this reason I asked him to work with me on “something” around the same time this mix for Mesh came about Whilst I was putting the final touches to the mix I asked him to send over a few photos, without any context, I was just interested to catch up with what he was working on, out of the few dozen photos he sent I became transfixed on this image, the content has no immediate grand concept and yet it’s ambiguity had possessed me. Listening through the finished mix now, the sound and the image have become one, the narrative they evoke together
is expansive and personable, I would hope this is an expectation of listeners of my chin-stroke-type-beat music anyway, to sit and stare into space and let their mind wander, perhaps to places they wouldn’t normally be comfortable to explore" - Kinn

No holding back, Jinjé (Lee Malcom) throws down some dance-floor calefaction on this edition 18 of the Mesh Mix Series. It covers sonic sketches across the electronic spectrum to IDM, garage, glitchy acid stompers to 4/4 abrasive bass rollers. 

It's a much welcomed contribution to the series, after Mesh released Jinjé's debut 4 track this year, entitled "Open Unity" which was a reference to Malcolms' love of rave culture and the community aspect it provides - which this mix further seemingly provides homage too.

Something different on the Mesh mix series this month, next up,  Kiara Scuro. The London based duo present their warm up set that raised and set the bar for the evening, recorded live from Phonox, London on Sat 14 August as part of Max Coopers' 4 nights at Phonox Residency. 

With guest shows on World Wide FM and Balamii Radio where they've showcased their tastes for varying genres and sounds from across the globe, and invited guests like Gilles Peterson and Mehmet Aslan to join them. Kiara Scuro are quickly becoming familar faces in some of the worlds most infuential and coverted clubs and festivals. Thanks to Rose and Nadia for contributing to the series!

Mesh are pleased to introduce Istanbul-based artist Pleizel, with an immersive four-track EP, Primal Touch, out 15th November.

An accomplished producer and audio engineer with a background in sound design that spans across multiple disciplines, from film music composition to 3D digital arts, she employs a layered understanding of the technicalities behind music creation to craft vast productions untethered to any one genre.

With a strong focus on musicality and a rigorous ear for sonic detail, her debut EP on Mesh is a testament to the meeting of the technical and the emotive.

Label owner Max Cooper said of Pleizel, “From the moment I first heard Pleizel's music there was magic and huge potential there. And when I first saw her live show I was blown away. An amazing musician, producer and performer, I'm excited to see where she goes with it.”

‘Celestial Embrace’ opens with warm, shapeshifting pads that ebb and flow around distant chords with light touches of euphoria, characteristic of the cinematic qualities found in much of Pleizel’s work.

Next up is ‘Liana’ - a track previously released on Mesh’s Lattice 001 compilation - that pairs glitching analogue funk with rising chords. ‘Midnight Horses’ then steps into darker surrounds, with sparse, eerie beeps driven forward by a marching percussive framework.

Rounding off the EP is Affinity Bond; another example of Pleizel’s highly visual sonic paintings, with expansive sound design wandering amongst distorted vocals on top of a hypnotic, irregular rhythmic metre.

Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate. So in case you missed the official broadcast – or wanted a download – here it is.

Mesh; the name brings to mind an underlying foundation, a wire frame for a crafted piece of art to ensure structural integrity. It’s an apt name for multimedia artist Max Cooper’s electronic imprint, where the MO is clattering rhythms and voluminous ambient vistas; sound as a vehicle for big ideas. Cooper’s exclusive Bleep mix celebrates the achievements of Mesh with a collection of works from their discography, featuring the ambient swells of Rob Clouth and some especially crisp breakbeat re-alignments from the likes of Reid Willis and Synkro. To top it off, there’s a couple of unreleased Cooper numbers you won’t hear anywhere else.
