Mesh Series 017: Lake Turner

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, and what they listen to.

Andrew Halford aka Lake Turner is a London based musician. He’d previously made music in post-punk and indie groups Great Eskimo Hoax and Trophy Wife. Having been introduced to the Kompakt family by his sometime collaborator Yannis Philippakis of Foals. Lake Turner first appeared on "TOTAL 16". This was then followed by remixes for Foals, Weval, contributing to Velvet Desert Music Vol. 2 and also released the "Prime Mover EP" on Algebra / Flash Of The Spirit. The lush ambient-disco-techno dreams of Videosphere were constructed and completed in his London studio and at his parents’ arable and sheep farm in Worcestershire, which might help explain the hazy, unhurried pastoralism of the album. 

Turner presents us with an eclectic mix that nods to many reference points when it comes to music making as well as what to expect in a club orientated setting. The addition of a remix and an original track of his own add a further taste of what he’s all about. Enjoy!

Tune in for a special mix featuring songs that he discovered and fell in love with while traveling or living abroad, revisiting some of his own memories of travel and discovery through music:

"The songs in this mix remind me of specific places and contexts where I first heard them, or where I fell in love with them. The opening track, for example, brings back a vivid memory of driving through the night from Amsterdam to Paris while on tour, on the day of the Brussels airport terrorist attack in 2016. I remember feeling very far away from home, chaotic, and strange. AAMAR’s track “Home” was the perfect calming and introspective piece of music for that surreal moment in time. As we slowly head into the post-pandemic world where traveling, and touring if you’re a musician, is once again considered a normal thing to do, I thought I’d revisit some of my own memories of travel and discovery through music. It is also a fitting theme for my upcoming new album as Arms and Sleepers, which is titled “former kingdoms” and drops on May 10. The record was written exactly 25 years after I first immigrated to the US and is an attempt to memorialize that ultimate journey in my life which changed me forever. Istanbul artist Korhan Oraydın known as Non Square delivers a set that guides us across a plain of broken, jarred and rugged percussive elements all the way from 60 to 130bpm. Featuring familiar label faces and new friends, Non Square joins the dots between electronica, techno, IDM and classical electro. This mix displays little restraint, and gets straight down to business.
