Moakz's stunning debut album 'The Critical Path', releases on double 12" vinyl and digital on 6th June 2025. Beautifully mastered by Beau Thomas at Ten Eight Seven, and with stunning artwork produced by Clayton Burke, the release finds the artist in fine form, showcasing his cinematic sound in full length for the first time.

After a series of releases over the past four years, the Southampton, UK-based DJ / Producer and co-owner / A&R of Codename: RCRDS finally drops his distinctive debut LP , drawing on influences as diverse as film scores, soul, jazz, post-rock and techno for a warm, deep and often emotional take on the drum and bass / atmospheric drumfunk sound.

The release includes the full LP and 3 digital only bonus tracks.

Here we are with our 12th vinyl release. We’re really proud of our back catalogue, and even prouder to be able to add more to it. And what better way to expand our portfolio than by inviting yet another exciting artist to join our 12” club. And this artist is Ricky Force – a man who’s seen it all in the more breakbeat-oriented face of drum & bass, pushing his trademark intricate percussion programming since 1999, releasing quality music on labels such as Reinforced, Repertoire, Omni Music, Pinecone Moonshine, DSCI4 or 117 and now finding home with us. Without further ado, here’s Ricky Force and his latest single – a pair of not your usual 170-BPM masterpieces leaning heavier towards roots vibes, jungle, halfstep, and dub (Ricky’s from Dublin, so it makes total sense). “ Ecstasy ” starts with a looped vocal bit that leads the listener on towards a thick bush overgrown with full-bodied kicks, sharp, frantic breaks, and a bassline composed of massively booming bits that are bound to keep you on your toes, especially if you have the chance to enjoy it on some proper sound-system. “ Firehouse Dub ” is, in turn, a solid half-stepper strongly rooted in jungle revivalism. It marches slowly and steadily, unfolding some interesting stories on the way – a series of thickly-arranged broken beats, a pack of blares, some vocal bits here and there… Put together, they create an amazing mixture of classic sounds organized up to modern-day standards with surgical precision only Ricky Force is capable of. A true feast for all those into the less polished and more true-school shades of drum & bass.

Veteran tech-stepper Trace returns to CNVX, this time teaming up with Kid Drama and Berlin based Survey, delivering 4 chunky chuggers doused in 90’s nostalgia in the Raise EP.

First up is the title track, Raise. Kid Drama joins Trace to produce a heavyweight sonic fizzer of a bassline, guaranteed to destroy a rig (or live stream from your kitchen) coupled with a stab that sounds like it could be straight off a Lucky Spin record. This track is set to please fans both old and new.

Survey jumps in the mix on Detroit, a tense, almost Source Direct string leads before dropping into sub-heavy drums and snarling reese-like bass. Tight engineering and razor sharp sounds complete this apocalyptic stepper.

Timps is a collaboration filled with industrial oil drum hits. Angry bass waves wash over a minimalistic beat peppered with vocal edits. Attention to detail is paramount here, with a cheeky throwback edit towards the end of the track.

Old-skool intro chords to start and film-like vocal before dropping into a clash of fighting breakbeats over a subsonic bassline. As the track progresses, we hear the introduction of techno elements wrapping up the final collaboration on this second CNVX outing for Trace.

A collection of tracks recorded and mixed by Nico No U Turn featuring collaborations with DJ's mainly from  Barnes, London.   

Most uploaded tracks are from the original DAT masters.  

The 'No U Turn sound' known throughout the drum and bass scene was the culmination of a recording process, honed in over 4 years from 1992 in one room - a studio on the third floor of an industrial building in Acton, London.  

The repetition of DJ's making tracks at No U Turn, often cutting them as exclusive dub plates, playing them out in clubs then seeing the audience reaction before returning to base to try out another idea, led to the creation of a 'new bass sound’.  This essentially involved adding distortion to an already popular bass sound form the world of Jungle/Drum and Bass.  Nico got the idea of adding distortion to the bass from Larry Graham, the great American bass player.  By adding a little distortion to often deep bass lines, the bass could now be heard on even the smallest speakers.  
This bass sound, made No U Turn records stand out from the rest.  You could 'hear' a No U Turn release in a genre where a lot of records often sounded very similar.  

Another feature of a No U Turn record was the final mix down, which was always a live recording of the computer playing back the track whilst Nico 'dubbed' at the desk.  Minimal flicks of eq's and mutes, reverb splashes and sweeping of the bass frequencies were all done live during the final mix down.  
This is why the end of No U Turn record often sounds different from the beginning.  
Things have changed along the way.  
The dubbing process, added a dimension to these drum and bass records.  It made them a bit different. 

All the No U Turn records were completely inspired by the great records of the time.  
Doc Scott’s records in particular.  

BACK IN THE DAY
Nico: “Ed Rush grew up across the street.  His parents had jukebox and encouraged Ed’s love of music.  One summer Ed started playing me all these crazy records, unlike anything I’d ever heard.  These were UK hardcore records.  He had two turntables?  I thought it was weird.   I’d knock on Ed’s door and his mum would say:  “He’s upstairs….he’s in the mix.”  This must have been 1990.  
Ed Rush: “I just want to play out to a live audience, but it’s so hard to get a booking when no one knows who you are.”  
Nico: “How about you have a record with your name on it?  People might get to know you for the music you make and then you’d be nearer to getting a booking because people might have heard of you.”
Nico: “I’ve made records before but never this sort thing!  Let’s give it a go.  I’ve just bought a sampler.”

We made our first record.  Our third was a tune called Bludclot Artattack.   The plan worked.   

The No U Turn ethic was, and still is, about the power of effective collaboration.  
Nico:  “It's just more fun and often turns out better to make music with other people and a computer, rather than alone with the machine. “
