The mixtape Berlin-based songwriter https://soundcloud.com/lucykruger exclusively complied for NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION, like her latest album "Transit Tapes" , lives in the paradoxical state of intimacy and alienation that we find with strangers on the train. All going in the same direction, but how often do we break the silence? As if there were some common agreements amongst strangers to remain exactly that. Yet, for the duration of the ride we inhabit a shared space. On her record, Lucy examines those spaces, the in-betweens and the almost, the melancholia and promises that transit holds. Not really a search, but an ache for something else we hope to find even if it is just by moving the couch from one place to another.

Exclusive: Lucy Kruger's Meditative Transit Mixtape

"Ever since I was a child music has been a sacred space for me to dream inside of," says Adam Miller and his recently released solo debut "Gateway" underlines that with haunting meditative sounds. . His distinctive cinematic, neo-psychedelic wave guitar play we've all come to love from his work with Chromatics is still the heart of his sound but by being freed from conventional structures it allows the artist do dive deeper into the actual sound and its dream-like state. "Gateway" is an ambient album designed with and for guitars and that's something you don't see that often these days.

For NBHAP he compiled an exclusive mixtape that works like a companion piece to the whole "Gateway" concept and it's a joyful ride. About it Miller says: "Each song in my mix is its own little world to me, and each song here creates that space for me to dream. Some of these songs have been standbys for the majority of my life. Others have entered into my awareness only more recently."

I’ve been following German artist https://soundcloud.com/jennifertouch since her early days and I’m as honored as I am happy that she’s the first person to join me on this new adventure called “The Messy Mix”. As a fellow lover of dark 80s wave sounds I was more than curious about the story she would be telling here. Jennifer went for the theme called “Purple Postpunk Poets of Pop “ and here’s what she got to say about it:

“Music speaks to me like words do. … The mix is inspired by my favorite poets Allen Ginsberg and Sylvia Plath. The unconventional offbeat and verbally eclectic poetry of the Beatniks and the modern feminist and dark vibe of Plath's writing fit well with my way of consuming and feeling music. All tracks of the mix are part of the same sonic and emotional universe, although they come from different genres. When I curate music for a DJ set, I feel like the recipient of a poem, written by different artists to create a special world in others. The longer I've been a musical artist myself, the more I'm into poetry and the written word, as I'm also a writer. And maybe part of a new beat generation.”

Next to some fascinating tunes by The Bug, SF-X, Twin Tribes and Broken English Club Jennifer also included a tune of her own as well as overdub extracts of poets from Sylvia Plath. Very fascinating journey, I gotta say. Jennifer Touch also got a second album called “Midnight Proposals” out on February 17 via FatCat Records. You might know its first singles from my playlists, so make sure to have this gloomy record on your radar.

Messy Mix  02 | ﻿"Purple Postpunk Poets of Pop" by Jennifer Touch

I’ve been happy to call German band @krakowlovesadana friends for a few years now. Over the past 15 years the musical brainchild of songwriter Deniz Çiçek has delivered outstanding songs and records and it really bothers me that they haven’t reached global stardom yet. Well, they got a loyal constantly growing fanbase and Çiçek’s songwriting and storytelling only get better with age. Her seventh album “Oceanflower” is set for a release on February 14 and her Messy Mix is directly influenced by the work on this new record which does indeed come with a certain ‘back to basics’ approach from Kraków Loves Adana following the last more electronic releases. 

Here’s what Çiçek got so say about her reconnecting mixtape:

"I live my life in album cycles with each album representing a particular chapter of my life. Oceanflower is a testimony of reconnecting with my innermost being & overcoming depression. It also marks a return to my musical roots, turning more towards my first learned instrument - the guitar - and phasing out the electronic influences. This playlist is full of songs that accompanied and comforted me during this process and they are best listened to walking through nature or at home alone.“

Lovers of profound 80s and 90s indie will find a few few familiar faces (and voices) in here, including Slowdive, The Cure, Elliott Smith, Peter Gabriel as well as the critically underrated 00s indie group The Organ. This Messy Mix does indeed feel like a good old fashioned mixtape, something your younger self would burn on a CD for you to remind you about the things that used to be close to your heart. I’m thankful to Kraków Loves Adana and their contribution and I hope you'll enjoy it as well.

Messy Mix 03 | "Reconnecting With Myself" (by Kraków Loves Adana)

The louder and the more chaotic this world gets the more we all long for silence. But is true silence even possible in an accelerated world of noise? Norwegian artist Tuva Hellum Marschhäuser aka @tuvaband asked herself the same question when we started talking about her very own Messy Mix. “I've realised it's never really completely silent,” she says. “Silence always has a sound. Sometimes I want to control what silence sounds like.“ And this fifth edition of my ongoing mixtape project wants to do exactly that - it gives the silence a sound, handpicked by Tuva.

“I’ve created a mix of songs that either contains sounds that can trigger ASMR, or has other comfortable sounds, or can can be relaxing/calming. I’ve been listening more to this type of music the last month because I’m in a phase right now where I’m experimenting more with samples and nice, intricate sounds. Some of these songs are also from albums I listen to while I’m doing yoga. I also thought it was important to add some songs which can release some dopamine, while they’re still kind of, or almost, fitting in to this mix.”

The result is a fascinating and very calming listening experience, packed with a few familiar names like Nicolas Jaar, Sylvan Esso as well as a brief musical moment from Tuvaband but mostly it are tracks and sounds that are unknown to me. Almost 90 minutes of meditative pleasure for your personal retreat from whatever the heck is going on right now in the world. It’s an invitation to deepdive into these calming sounds and maybe even yourself and I’m thanking Tuvaband very much for this beautiful trip.

Kalipo - 'You'

Danish producer @kasperbjorke is what I would consider a true good guy on multiple levels. Not only is he one of the finest DJs around, he’s also dropping great and surprising releases on a regular basis for almost two decades now, he’s also a vocal artist when it comes to political topics. Especially environmental topics and the health of our dear planet is as equally close to Kasper’s heart as it is to mine. I consider him a brother in spirit when it comes to these things… well, and our mutual love for Balearic beats. So, obviously… I’m thrilled that he participated in my little mixtape project. His “Messy Mix” was inspired by (and compiled during) a recent train ride between Berlin and Copenhagen since Mr. Bjørke’s avoids flying as often as he can. The result is a soothing and wonderful listening experience. 

Here’s how he describes his approach:

“I always feel at my best when I am accompanied by music, in almost anything that I do. I lean on music to contemplate, to work and to dream, when cooking or cleaning, playing with my children - or when traveling, gazing through the window of a train moving through the constant changing landscapes. Mixtapes can come in handy in many occasions and have been a thing I have practiced since my teenage years. I got in the mood for making this particular mixtape during a train journey going back home from Berlin to Copenhagen, after a weekend with two club gigs. 

Going home after gigs often makes me listen to quite soothing tracks that can act as a comforting mental pillow, after days of being around new people, loud music and a disrupted sleeping pattern. There are some beats in there too to bring the journey forward too and the mix include tracks are some of my favorites, some are new and some that have stayed with me over the years… I have also added one track from my latest album Puzzles, which came out a few weeks ago. I suggest you put on this mixtape when you are going on your next journey. May it be inwards or somewhere physically.”

Apart from that, I think it also works great as a relaxing mix to welcome the spring season so you don’t necessarily need to be on a train to enjoy this sweet selection. Messy Mix 15 | Berlin - Copenhagen Train Journey (by Kasper Bjørke)

While I consider myself to be a quite okay music curator, I bow down before a man like @propjoemusicforears because this guy remains a true expert when it comes to selecting proper tunes, surprising the audience and creating very cohesive vibes with his DJ sets. After being recently invited to be part of his legendary “Music For Ears” series (https://soundcloud.com/propjoemusicforears/music-for-ears-32-burnout-sumner-the-messy-mix) I’m now more than happy to return the favour by having the man from Sydney over for his very own edition of my “Messy Mix” series.

His one-hour set is less about big musical storytelling but more about creating a very specific vibe which he fittingly labelled “Irrational International”. This set is also a little different than Prop Joe’s usual style, being more European, Arabic & Caribbean. Usually he’s always up for strolling down the hip hop, street soul / reggae path but avoided that inherent temptation in favour of something more surprising. However, the mix keeps that vibrant smooth 80s/90s retro character which I come to love about his sets and the whole “Music For Ears” series. It’s a celebration of music, especially the one that’s harder to find. And I think that’s what the job of a good curator/ DJ should be - finding those treasures, putting them in a great setting and giving the audience a good time. And let me tell you - this set is definitely giving me a good time.

It’s the perfect soundtrack for hot summer days, pool parties and other social hangouts with your loved ones these days. Please give it a spin. The Messy Mix series is now taking a well deserved break before it’ll return in the fall. Until then, please enjoy the existing sets so far.

Messy Mix 17 | Irrational International (by Prop Joe)

As some of you might have guessed by now I’m a dedicated fan of all things that you could label as “Balearic house”. There’s just something about those delicate tropical grooves that really resonates with me. That plays a huge part of my Burnout Sumner DJ alias and as a fan of that sub-genre I got in touch with a few fellow lovers of that paradisiac sound. Attila and Szilard from Budapest are such brothers in spirit and as @pleasurevoyage they’ve been delivering wonderful sets, remixes and own productions throughout the past years. You’ll have probably spotted tunes by them in some of my sets. Now, it’s time to shed an even brighter light on them.

Usually, Pleasure Voyage's feel-good music draws inspiration from their seaside journeys, but for Messy Mix, the guys decided to take a different route. Here’s how their “Mystical Forest Mix” came to be: 

“Szilard was gazing out of his window at the misty autumn forest and felt inspired by the scene. He suggested to Attila to use this as the theme for the mix. Attila, who’s also a talented photographer, then dove into his archives to find some fitting photos that support the vibe. The mix is an ethereal, floating journey that captures the mood of the changing seasons.”

I can confirm that there is a sweet late summer mood that runs throughout this one hour of blissful sounds. But the mix also feels like a distant memory to the warm season now that we’re approaching cold winter days. There’s some wonderful musical selections in there.  The opening track comes from Körút, a Hungarian project Pleasure Voyage recently co-produced. Its dreamy lyrics capture the bittersweet feeling of summer slipping away. So, what are you waiting for - join me and two gentlemen for this lovely fantasy trip.

Messy Mix 19 | The Mystical Forest Mix (by Pleasure Voyage)

Happy new year everybody! I'm starting this new Messy Mix season with a musical journey provided by one of my favourite artists: Mr. Martin Kohlstedt. His set is such a fitting, meditative start for the beginning of the year that I just had to immediately share it with you, once you all recovered from your NYE party hangovers. 

This mix is fittingly titled “In The Beginning” and it perfectly suits the current mood and that special storytelling approach of Martin’s music I’ve always loved. I can’t put into words how honoured I am about him taking part in this project. But, obviously, he found the right words and here’s what he said about his selection:

“This music mix blends soundscapes, film scores, and ambient pieces, capturing the essence of a world beginning to form as the new year unfolds. It mostly features tracks I created, with a few guest contributions, and incorporates cinematic compositions that add a narrative depth. The mix spans an hour of deep, dark winter vibes, evoking the quiet intensity of early winter and the sense of a story unfolding. This passage of time feels almost suspended, as if everything has frozen in place, amplifying the stillness and quiet tension of the moment. Gradually, however, things begin to stir, and a slow but inevitable momentum starts to build, as the world begins to thaw and move once again.”

There’s nothing to add here, really. Thank you @martinkohlstedt for your work on this one, your music and also the important environmental work you do besides it. Martin is back on tour this spring and these shows are always amazing, unique experiences so make sure to get a ticket for them. He’s also very entertaining and such a sweet guy on and off stage. May this mix give you the needed energy to start 2025 in the best possible way.

Messy Mix 21 | In The Beginning (by Martin Kohlstedt)

Creatures of the night - rejoice and join me for a Messy Mix that’s dedicated to all the mischiefs and lovers of the twilight. It’s my turn again for a set in this series and I decided to turn it into a celebration of the sublime groove gloomy music sometimes has. 

I’ve been attracted to the sombre sounds of dark wave, post-punk, and anything you could label “Goth” since my adolescence. And while I also love the colourful and life-affirming spirit of a good rave there’s something that always pulls me back to these more sinister sounds. 

This Messy Mix imagines a fun night out (except you don’t smile, obviously), featuring favourite artists from the past and present. It starts with Depeche Mode’s “Black Celebration” because that sets the mood perfectly. There’s a few obvious classics in there by Bauhaus, New Order, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Xmal Deutschland and inevitable The Cure but there’s also plenty of room for contemporary dark favourites like Curses, Trentemoller, The Fauns, GEWALT, Dina Summer, The KVB or Krakow Loves Adana. 
As the reality gets equally dark quite often these days a dance to these tunes can have a cathartic effect. It surely has for me and I hope you’ll have a bit fun with this one as well. 🖤 🖤 🖤

Messy Mix 23 | A Dark Goth Disco Date

Now, this new Messy Mix is truly special for me. Cat Byrne runs one of my favourite shows on beloved UK independent radio @balamii, called “Biorthythms”. The field recording heavy show comes quite close to my attempt with this project to tell stories through sounds. And luckily, the talented host followed that path on “Wild Urban Edgelands” which combines her own field recordings, spoken words and sounds that suit the atmosphere of the theme. Here’s how Cat describes the theme of her Messy Mix:

“This is a mix dedicated to places where nature and people meet. I spend a lot of time in urban edgelands, walking where nature seeps into and takes hold of urban areas. These areas exist in a unique space between the rural and the urban, where contrasting environments meet in surprising, often beautiful ways. For this mix, I’ve woven together my own field recordings with music that captures my experiences walking through these local edgelands in Clapton, East London. It explores the sonic quality of these transitional spaces, where wide and expansive urban sounds meet the delicate and intricate sounds that emerge from the non-human world.”

It’s a wonderful calming and meditative selection, made for lonesome winter walks at the edge of the city and I think it’s best enjoyed with your headphones on and no interference. I love how Cat’s sets always take me on a somewhat emotional journey and I think she really nailed it with this mix. I’m extremely happy to have her on board. Messy Mix 22 | Wild Urban Edgelands (by Cat Byrne)

As the days are slowly getting warmer and longer, I am extremely excited to have one of my favourite figures of the German music scene on board to deliver the proper soundtrack for that sun-drenched vibe in the form of a brand new Messy Mix. Tom Hessler, better known as Der Assistent, released one of my favourite records of 2024 with the mesmerizing “Amnesie am Amazonas”. The whole album is a fascinating tropical, relaxing new age trip and I was obviously longing for the man to extend that vibe in the form of a mixtape. And of course, Mr. Hessler understood the assignment. 

Welcome to “The Blue Hour”. Originally Deer Assistent wanted to call the mix „Blue Hour on a River“ to cover up the fact that it is “just another Balearic-sundown-mix” as he says. But then it went through a little change as he explains: “Since I realized there are a few river-themed songs in this it made total sense. The idea wasn’t exactly Avantgarde but conceptually waterproof: To go down a figurative stream of water during the blue hour while listening to 60 minutes of music that had been chosen because they sounded „blue“ to me. However when I got asked for the accompanying photos and videos for social media, which are sadly and seemingly necessary today to promote music, I realized that I only had visual material that had the mediterranean as a backdrop. No rivers whatsoever. Just holiday photos and a sweet video of a chill cat watching the Cretan sunset.”

Maybe it is now just “The Blue Hour“ mix but that doesn’t make this laidback selection by Der Assistent less tempting. This soothing 60-minutes selection includes some rare tunes that his buddy DJ norm gave me when Tom visited him and his partner DJ Linda Vista to play Brussels a while ago. And whether you got a river close to you or now - you won’t regret listening to this wonderful selection. Thanks for assisting me with this one.

Messy Mix 24 | The Blue Hour (by Der Assistent)

Ciao, amici amanti della disco! Summer has started and I kindly invite you all for a little dance tonight. Yeah, that feels kind of strange since the world seems more on fire than ever… but maybe that’s also a necessary reminder that there are still great things worth living for. And if you ask me, a good night of Italo Disco sweetness is definitely such a thing. And that’s why I decided to dedicate an entire Messy Mix to this odd sub genre of synth pop. 

However, obviously I’m not a real pioneer here because over here in Germany that revival is already in full swing. Italo Disco parties gain more and more attention in Berlin. I mean there’s even one happening at Berghain and you are actually allowed to not wear black for this (at least, nobody stopped me when I went there with a batik shirt on). And while some music revivals are questionable, this one is extremely welcomed by me.

There’s a naive beauty and simple joy in this sound. It’s the sweet spot in music history when making sounds became easier due to the invention of synthesizer while it still relied on a certain creative skill set, resulting in profound musicians creating catchy hooks - but often in a quite cringe setting. But they all loved pop music and made you dance and smile. And this mixtape is trying to catch exactly that spirit - with all the fun and flaws from 80s italo disco.

The majority of these tracks are indeed odd tunes from the 1980s, every now and then there’s an contemporary edit of a classic in there, and also a track from the great Nuvo Testamento since these folks really now how to make a track from today sound like one from the heydays of Hi-NRG. But apart from that, I’ve kept this set quite old school. Have fun with it, dance through the sun with a smile on your face and maybe a glass of Aperol in your hand. Arrivederci.

Messy Mix 26 | Alta Energia: An Italo Disco Extravaganza

Friends, we’re right in the middle of the sweet spot of seasons, between a cosy full blooming spring and the unbearable heat waves of the summer. That calls for quality time outside with your loved ones - and if you’re in need for a proper soundtrack here, don’t scroll any further because Berlin-based DJ @jini-piju got you covered in the form of the 25th edition of my MESSY MIX series.

In a lucky coincidence spring is also Jin’s favourite season so she was more or less destined to create this hour of delicate tunes to match with the current vibe. “I stumbled upon this track called „spring has sprung“ by SOYUZ (СОЮ3), Asha Puthli & Sven Wunder,” she explains the origins of the set. “I find it very beautiful so it was clear to me that it has to be the intro to this mixtape to set the right vibe reflecting how everything’s coming alive again.”

Jini defines the spring season as a punch of energy: “For me it’s all about cruising around with my bike, experiencing the city in a drift, feeling the wind on my skin & enjoying how the sun tickles out the first freckles on my nose. It’s the start of endless sessions in the park, cuddling on meadows, running through fields. I want you to listen to this with a breeze in your hair, with friends in nature or at the beach. I want you to feel the primavera drift & come with me on a messy, but funky ride starting with some slow RnB, picking up on some balearic tunes, introducing a finishing touch of banging disco & one of my favorite deep house tracks.”

Needless to say, I’m all in for riding along her Primavera Drift. This MESSY MIX is the sweetest kind of musical messiness and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. Besides being a great house music DJ and a part of the @diskoflausch collective, Jini also runs a great weekly morning show on Cashmere Radio which goes by the name “Sunrise Serenade” and is also extremely recommendable listening material. Check it out and may you enjoy as many tender spring dates with your loved ones as possible.

Messy Mix 25 | Primavera Drift (by Jini Piju)

Hey friends. Summer is still in full swing (in Germany it’s a bit of a rainy swing so far) and that calls for a fitting Messy Mix. And for the 27th episode I got a true expert on board when it comes to laidback sunny tunes - Christian Beetz from Hamburg, better known in the Soundcloud-verse as @frwctrl (“frequency without control”). He’s been around the scene since the 90s, working as DJ, music blogger and passionate record collector. Right now he’s regularly throwing a “Baleraric Disco Yachtride” boat party in Hamburg and that definitely sounds like an event I should catch whenever I’m in town the next time.

Since Christian’s Soundcloud is loaded with hundreds of delightful mixes for various moods, his involvement in the MESSY MIX series has been a longtime wish of mine. Of course, his hour of selected sounds comes with a summer theme and became a musical tribute to the special lighting conditions on Fuerteventura throughout the day from sunrise to sunset. “I have spent my summer holidays on this island over the last 10 years in a row and I was there for the first time back in the early 80’s,” Christian explains. “The special lighting conditions on the island fascinate me since the first time, so I tried to capture the individual light situations throughout the day in a mix.” 

The result is a selection that starts smooth and relaxing but gains a bit speed throughout its run. Truly a great after hour soundtrack or one for hot summer days. Let me just say, it also works extremely well if you don’t happen to stay onFuerteventura. The set is now up and running on the Messy Mix Soundcloud page. We can’t deny it anymore, friends… The summer season entered its final stage and that is a time that tends to always make me a bit melancholic. Luckily I’m not the only one who feels that way and for those of you who need some musical comfort, I got just the right Messy Mix for you, delivered by a true hero of mine - Mr. @joemorris from Leeds.

Joe has been an essential figure in the contemporary Balearic house and electronica scene, running the great label Shades Of Sound Records with plenty of sweet releases in that field, including his own ones. He released a new album called “Some Kind of Paradise” this summer which I enjoyed during the warmer days of the season. It’s a wonderful selection of 90s trip hop, downtempo, and modern Balearic electronica and I love it. Same goes for his monthly radio show on “Loose FM”... needless to say - I’m a huge fan and I kindly recommend you to check out his Soundcloud as soon as possible.

So, obviously I’m very thrilled to have Joe on board for this laidback new Messy Mix which goes by the title “Last Rays Of Summer.” According to him this set is a “collection of moods and sound palettes to compliment the last rays of summer as they melt into the first shafts of autumnal light.” And yeah, it definitely transports that atmosphere in a very warm and wonderful way. It makes that whole transitional process a lot easier and I hope you’ll enjoy this soothing selection of music as much as I do.

Some things just take their time. And in an accelerated world like ours, this isn’t the worst approach you can take. When I started my little Messy Mix project three years ago, @will_samson was actually the first person I approached for a contribution. But well, then life happened and although it changed quite a bit for the both of us during that time, I’m happy that we’re now getting a full-circle-moment with Mr. Samson in the form of a truly beautiful musical journey that is his very own Messy Mix.

With his “Sounds Of The Earth” set the acclaimed songwriter and ambient composer created something that’s close to his own music - full of textures, exciting little twists and a raw unfiltered spirit that’s been fascinating me about his releases for more than a decade now. “I thought a lot about what theme to focus on for this mix and I kept returning to the idea of organic sounds,” Samson describes the mix: “Whether it is folk, electronic or something else, the music I'm always most drawn to has a warm, earth-like quality.” 

For the songwriter who has resided in Portugal in recent years this approach is not just about using the actual sounds of nature: “From analogue recording to sampling or the simple use of acoustic instruments, there are many ways that these audio characteristics present themselves.” And within this hour you’re getting all of it in a very satisfying way.

“Sounds Of The Earth” is a mix like a scuba dive, one that invites you all to let yourself fall into these immersive organic sounds in order to feel connected to the earth and perhaps maybe even escaping the digital chaos for a moment. At least that’s the wish of Will Samson and it’s also mine. Needless to say, I’m thrilled to finally have him on board for this beautiful Messy Mix.
