(Story continued from Witchtape #96)

That cold and misty morning in late September, the little witch woke up from the pleasant sound of the singing birds and croaking frogs in her forest.  Next to her Falke was still sleeping, the 9 year old girl who had arrived in the forest 4 months ago.  She had run away from the orphanage and was determined to go and live in the forest and become a witch.  In the 4 months since her arrival, her transformation from human to witch went remarkably well.  Her joyful giggles filled the woods every day, while she was playing and dancing with butterflies or squirrels.  All the animals of the forest adored the little girl.  And when she wasn’t playing, she was singing age-old witch’s songs with her honeysweet voice, enchanting all forest dwellers.  Last summer was by far the happiest time of her whole life, after a difficult childhood in which she lost both her parents to drug abuse.  Falke had quickly gotten used to walking around barefoot, but – now that the Indian Summer was over and the temperatures were plunging – it had become obvious that she was suffering from the cold at times.  Each morning (sometimes as cold as 6°C) she woke up on her bed of moss shivering from the cold well before dawn, after which she snuggled under the blanket of the witch to get warm again.  And the day before, the blond girl even refused for the first time to participate in the daily swim in the Nymph’s pond because the water was too cold for her.  So it was clear something had to be done. And fast.
The little witch frenetically browsed through an old book with secret witch’s recipes and she swiftly took a cauldron after finding the recipe against the cold.  Meanwhile, Lalita the nymph prepared a cup of tea with spices from her home country Sri Lanka.  After the spice tea was ready, Falke drank from it with little sips and with every sip she felt her tiny body warming up a bit more.  A few minutes later the witch’s brew was ready too.  Luckily all ingredients (including brambles and white grapes) could be found in the witch’s forest.  Falke drank the beverage with little sips as well, and quickly her face turned red and her whole body started to glow, while her bright blue eyes started to shine again.  After finishing her cup of witch’s brew, she immediately ran towards the nymph’s pond, shucked off her white-and-pink dress along the way and dived into the cold water while screaming from joy.  Her ear-piercing shriek came to an abrupt halt when she hit the water with a splash, after which she disappeared under the water surface for a long time.  There was an eerie silence and the witch and nymph were a bit worried that this dive into the water was maybe a bit too optimistic with these cool temperatures, but luckily the blond girl quickly resurfaced and she couldn’t stop giggling.  The 2 brews worked way better than expected, and the little girl didn’t feel the cold water at all.  The witch and nymph looked at each other and smiled, before jumping into the water themselves, playing and splashing water with Falke for a long long time …
