Suicide is the leading cause of violent death in the world, with 11.4 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Every 40 seconds, a person dies by suicide. And for every death, many more attempts existed.
It's hard to explain why some people decide to commit suicide, while others in a similar or worse situation don't. Most suicides talk or give signals about their thoughts of death, and addressing the topic does not increase the risk. On the contrary, talking to someone about it can alleviate the anguish and tension these thoughts bring.
