DC Promo Tracks #868: Clafrica "Summa Breeze"

Kicking off a new series of 7" vinyl releases on Posthuman’s Balkan Vinyl imprint - the "Kanlab series" - focused on celebrating underground artists from the label roster, is Suddi Raval.

A UK acid house & rave legend, Suddi was one half of Together who crashed the UK charts in 1990 with "Hardcore Uproar". The author of "A Brief History of Acid House", with three decades of production, writing, and journalism, Suddi's love and enthusiasm for the electronic music scene is unparalleled. He makes his Balkan Vinyl debut here with two deep-space hardware electro jams. All artwork for the Kanlab series is by non-binary designer Leo Soph Welton of I Am Human Design.

Over the past decade, the mysterious, London-based artist Moiré has perfected a syrupy, addictive brand of dance music via labels like Actress's Werk Discs and illustrious imprints like Ghostly and Rush Hour. For most of this period, Moiré seemed pramarily concerned in creating alternative universe club tracks. The beats were hypnotic, if wonky. The pads were deep before they were refracted through an oblique filter. In a discography bearing a surfeit of leftfield high points, Circuits, Moiré's latest album for the Berlin-based Avenue 66 (Lowtec, John Frusciante, Joey Anderson) is a massive creative leap that fully breaks with the strictures of a "conventional" dance music.

While there are still nods to the low-slung, slow house style Moiré's perfected in the past ("Circuit 1"), as well as the looming shadow of hardcore ("Circuit 8), Moiré's style now billows into a liminal, cinematic zone that recalls the canonical SAW albums, BOC or even Seefeel's enduring, genre-free experiments. Rhythms come and go at all tempos, from Hauntological four-on-the-floor to flickering downtempo and ambient house approximations. But the emphasis lies with the melodies. From the queasy orchestral style of "Circuits 1" to the glacial, "end credits"-style synths that close out the album, these motifs bear an uncanny familiarity, as though they always existed. You recognize them, not from a previous listen, but rather, some half-remembered dream, or, perhaps, a previous lifetime.

Dust Down Records invites New Digital Fidelity, who has delivered an hour of fluid dance music very much for the purists, ranging from Chicago & Detroit sounds to Afro & jackin' rhythms. 

Founder of @scopicrecorduk, this producer & DJ based out of East London is one to watch. His latest release has seen him team up with @officialbyrontheaquarius on remix duties and his sound is revealing of his inspirations - G-Funk to Chicago, Dam Funk to Chez Damier - this is one hour very well spent. 🚀

Just For The Night #5 - New Digital Fidelity

Perpetual Line Stepper  hits hard  right off the bat with a  thick and warm kick drum driving forward a hypnotic synth groove inspired by the motion of bodies on a full floor as experienced from the DJ booth.
Executive Order 12333  is the outside cut on the flip and it takes  a  deeper, more sinister direction with floating melodic rhythms and thumping basslines.  In the spirit of different directions the “different mix” of Perpetual Line Stepper is the inside cut.  The mood is similar to the mix on the flip side but this mix swings the vibe around to a sexy and futuristic peep show in an orbiting red light district.

The  Shadow Locked EP hits off with smooth, driving use on A1 Shadow Locked.  The dynamic, harmonious succession of sounds griping to rhythmic baselines evokes a profound funky, dane into the night kind of feeling.  A2. Kraftwerk am Strand is wonderfully playful track whose sensitivity to the beautiful female vocals.  B1, Theory of 3/4/3 Aplha is a pure Techno Soul track whose origins must be in the depths of the soul, warm dance grooves which remind  us of the heavenly Mode M (Void Records, GB) although Dan’s music can’t be so easily compared.  His style is very much his own. Distinctly Curtin. The futuristic Track B2, You’re so Dirty, is a self generating cleverly composed soundscape which reinvents itself through clear, driving beats.  The vinyl comes full circle with an exciting and funky vision of the future in which Dan Curtin, in terms of dance music, clearly shows he’s in a class of his own.
