Going camping this weekend? Wish you had an extended DJ mix of campfire suitable music that everyone from the grandparents to the kids can enjoy? Look no further. Parental Guidance is Civillian's first foyer into the world of mixing live bands who are playing real instruments, a terrifying thought for many DJ's. With the common thread of real, live music - you can still expect Civillian's signature variety with selections ranging from Aretha Franklin covering the everyone's favourite The Band song "The Weight", to Waylon Jenning's penultimate driving tune "Ramblin' Fever".

Heavily inspired by pioneering efforts in that realm like Smalltown DJ's "Camping Mix", and DJ Ali B "Plays the Blues", this recording was going to be no usual undertaking for Civillian. After 2+ years of focused digging, nearly a year of practicing technique, and a 2 week artist residency in a van down by the river for the final recording stage, it is ready for the open air and the open road.

I've been compiling tracks of artists who have remixed some of the classics, for quite some time now, with the intent to make a unique mix. It has been pretty challenging, but these tracks bring me right back to the beginning of learning the mass amount of power music holds within us. Movement. Emotion. Compassion.. In 2013, The Detour Podcast was born.  A mixtape series to showcase the wide range of music we love, but don’t often get a chance to play in our DJ sets. Downtempo, trip-hop, disco, future bass, indie, liquid D&B, deep house, & world music were just some of the styles that quickly found a home in this project.  There is no better way to tell a story than through a mixtape and with each mix, we attempted to do just that. Curating a vibe to take the listener on a journey somewhere new and off the mainstream path is what the Detour Podcast is all about.   

The idea of guest mixes and collaborative mixes has been on our minds for sometime now, and wanting to do something for the 10th episode, we reached out to our friend Mt. Doyle.  Doyle’s mixes were always on heavy rotation for us with track selection and mixing which always felt to be on that Detour tip.  A few months ago we set up a collaborative dropbox and began sharing music and ideas and then each mixed a 40 minute section. We’re very happy to welcome Mt. Doyle to the Detour for this special edition of the Podcast and our first ever collaborative mix!

Just a guy who loves music. A lot.

What a ride its been, I've been DJing for the past 18 years and have always had fun bouncing between different genres, instruments and DJ tools.  These days I like to play whatever I've been feeling but you can expect a heavy dose of hip hop and throwback classics sprinkled amongst it all.  My influences range from Led Zeppelin to Dr Dre to Fleetwood Mac to Mozart to J Dilla to James Brown to... well too many to list!  I love all music.  Except pop country, that's a pass there bruh. 

I like to have fun with music, some people can get a little too serious sometimes.  Music is the great equalizer that connects us all and I think that's pretty rad.
