Reclaim Your City 036 | Dave Miller (Abstract Division)

Closely examining Dave Miller’s extensive past encounters with electronic music reveals an unassuming and skilled artist whose early life revolves around frequenting record stores,exploring analogue hardware and who, through New Wave and Italo Disco, eventually discovers techno. Meticulously building a collection of vinyl records that now easily outmatches most others of its kind, he is living proof that old habits do indeed die hard and, more importantly, that in his case this is a strong virtue instead of a vice. While digital’s advent has undeniably had a tremendous impact on the art of DJ-ing, Dave continues to rely on his vinyl; not out of stubborn refusal but rather out of appreciation for its creator, sound, label and artwork. This effort and warm affection charaterizes him, both as an artist and as a person.

After taking the neccesary time to get familiar with the production side of things he began putting out music around 2001 as part of the illustrious collective behind Audiosculpture and also with long-term friend Damian Keane under the Miller & Keane guise. More recently Dave and Paul Boex decided to start collaborating, marking the beginning of a new and ambitious chapter known now as Abstract Division. Together they have released music on Paul’s own Dynamic Reflection, Labrynth and Orbis Records and have played most major venues around the Netherlands, bringing the house down every single time.

In over a decade of gigs Dave has performed both in and outside of the Netherlands and can put Awakenings, Berghain, Tresor, Planet Rose, Mental Evolution and many more on his list of venues and events. Always carrying the right, perfectly suited records for the place, time and crowd he has managed to move small dancefloors and large warehouses alike.
As attention for Abstract Division increases and with a new trilogy, following last year’s well-received “Form and Function”, entitled “Time and Perception” set for release in the first half of 2013 the chance of Dave adding another decade to his career seems all the more likely.

Baudelaires poetries remain one of the most influential centrepieces in my book collection and they are maybe my most re-read volume of poems. Like all great poets he was an acute observer and an ingenious translator of feelings. His words paint precise and poignant pictures of the shapeless and inenarrable, like a mood or a sentiment. Sometimes only music can have the same effect on me. However, the fascination and the bloom of „Les Fleurs du Mal“ goes beyond that. Baudelaire's observations, could be considered overall as „negative“, for example as pessimistic - like the unfulfilled human pursuit of integrity -, or as repulsive - like the tristesse of urban hedonism. Induced by the linguistic beauty the emotional experiencing of the seemingly „negative“ or „evil“ - which in some places of the book can be kind of an explicit sense of self - transforms into a bittersweet atmosphere that holds grace and grandeur. Here I see a strong commonality with some music I love and I feel there is a similar approach entire music genres might have pursued: Maybe more than other art forms, music is sometimes met with refusal, confusion and lack of understanding when things become aestheticised, that are distasteful, obnoxious, cruel or - to stay with Baudelaire - „evil“. But behind all this stands a reality, the musician as an acute observer is witness to. Ars longa, vita brevis.

This mix, rather a sound collage, is meant to sonically illustrate the pictures Baudelaire put in my mind; sometimes a direct reflection of the texts, sometimes a associative pairing to the feelings Baudelaire's words elicit. Her commitment to finding and sharing new music is reflected in her radio show modular systems on CKUT 90.3 FM and her guest mixes for various podcasts. 
She has released music on labels such as Jacktone, Fur Trade, and Low Noise Productions, and performed live at events in Montreal and beyond, both as a headliner and in support of international artists. Her newest EP, Wild Light, was released in April by San-Francisco-based label Perfect Location.
