'Traditional Music of Notional Species Vol. I' is a devastating display of potential which ensures a journey unlike any you have encountered.  In the vast world of electronic music, where sounds, signifiers and gesture's are recontextualized to a numbing degree it is increasingly rare and refreshing to encounter a release as perspective distorting as the debut full length release by Rashad Becker.  The album is a masterpiece of focussed non-referential electronic environments.  It is is both warm, alien, paranoid and exhilarating.  Sounds are stretched in the most unusual manner, foreign bodies are frequent and the structure is simply bewildering.  Split into 'Themes and Dances', the 8 tracks guide the listener through Becker's brave new world.  Despite being entirely synthetic there are sounds which appear like a distortion of the world around us, on occasion 'voice-like' sounds are present, elsewhere there appears the sound of cicada's, only these cicada's are made of mercury and swim through time.

Coil - At the Heart of It All

Panoram presents his new album 'Background Story' - the successor to his blissed-out debut 'Everyone Is A Door' on the inimitable Firecracker Recordings. Released on his own Wandering Eye imprint, this new work is a meditation on the nature of memories and reality, each song digging deeper into the mind in the search for fragmentary details. 

Panoram explains: "This process is an unpredictable journey in which we face a complex puzzle made by our own manipulations. Mood swings can make our minds questioning what we thought it was "real". We can get easily lost among the infinite levels of reality." 

Opener 'Mind Puncture' sets out the stall for proceedings with spaced out filter-sweeps and mournful waves of guitar feedback, like some slow motion Angelo Badalamenti love scene, 'Black Milk Shower''s triumphant synth figure, soothing strings and crunchy pitched drums create a tripped out balearic vision, which directly contrasts the heartbreaking simplicity of the title track - a delicate piano paen that aches with melancholy. Closer 'You Are Correctly Lost' is a lush interstellar ballad to bring down the curtain, all cosmic synth swathes and celestial guitar drenched in plate 
reverb. 

The off-kilter beauty on the surface of Panoram's music belies the undercurrent of curdled visions and nightmares that reside below, indeed his music has once been described as sounding "like a painting by Edward Hopper hanging in the living room of Bill Pullman and Patricia Arquette in Lost Highway".

In the early eighties of last century, like many other declining industrial cities, the town of Grublit was a pretty grim place. Against this backdrop, dominated by brick and steel carcasses of redundant factories a lively counterculture thrived. 

What to think of the infamous "salsa extravaganza" Los Infantilos for instance, who, during their first and last live performance, turned VU's Venus in Furs into an unknown episode of Jackass? But more was going on, halfway the decade one of the initiatives was the Katharos Foundation, a loose collective of outsiders, self-proclaimed artists who, by the act of collaboration found a way to express their ideas and thoughts. Besides several multimedia events and concerts, the Foundation published some compilation cassettes, a magazine and a video magazine.

As music was the core activity, the Foundation harboured several bands. One of these projects was Sluagh Ghairm consisting of Reinier Brekelmans and Reinoud van den Broek. At that time the sound was atmospheric, industrial but not particularly aimed at the feet. Inspiration was drawn from a wide range of sources, music from all over the world and of all times, but also from philosophy, science, literature and last but not least nature. One particular notion, amongst others, is that we humans are part of nature,instead of being apart from or above it, Homo sapiens evolved in the same manner and from the same source as did Culex pipiens, the latter being the more successful. A humbling yet liberating and challenging notion that needed to be communicated, at least we thought so then......and, although supposedly wiser, still do. 

For the realisation of their ideas they were aided by the musically ever busy Robbert Heijnen who, almost casually and often unasked for, always added something extra and indispensable. Robbert's interest in electronic music made him eager to explore experimental studio set-ups that found a willing ear in us. This collaboration would eventually evolve into PWOG. Something had to trigger it though.

In 1988 we were invited to this party which we attended rather reluctantly for it being all "Love and Happiness".  Hours later, coming to our senses again, covered in sweat, completely relaxed and satisfied amidst a crowd of all kinds of other smiling faces who apparently had just shared the same experience, the last acidic beats of the Second Summer of Love still ringing in their ears too, things had changed. 

Probably silly but it only then occurred to us that the dance could be a powerful tool too, a way to communicate on a physical level, a way to celebrate life. A niche had opened and this was something we had to explore....not to copy but to incorporate. The  ensuing project was given the ludicrous working title Psychic Warriors of Gaia which wasn't supposed to stick.

MOHAMMAD is a chamber music trio consisting of Coti K (contrabass), ILIOS (oscillators) and Nikos Veliotis (cello). Based in Greece, Mohammad make long form work drone works that explore the lower end of the frequency spectrum whilst retaining an intense emotional capacity. The results are monumental slow moving physical blocks of sound, both daunting and musical.  The sheer weight of these recordings is impressive, the interplay of the musicians and instruments staggering, this end result being an album rich with immense harmonious abstraction which highlights years of dedication to their unique path.

In 1910, the illustrator George Herriman created the Krazy Kat comic strip. Ignatz, a vicious mouse, was Krazy Kat’s arch enemy, and his favourite pastime was to throw bricks at Krazy Kat’s head (who misinterpreted the mouse’s actions as declarations of love). Landen, Belgium based artist Bram Devens uses Ignatz as his alter-ego, and comes armed with his own pile of bricks; sparse, emotive songs born of the human condition, wrapped in effects, corroded by tape, driven forth by improvisation and spontaneity.

Whilst ‘Can I Go Home Now?’ is Ignatz’s first Fonal release, it is in fact his fifth full-length album proper (his seventh if you count the Kraak 2011 Cassette Compilation and 2010’s ‘Mort aux Vaches’ live LP on Staalplaat). Recorded in Schaarbeek, Brussels, Belgium between 2011 and 2012 on four-track and computer, the album sees Devens shift his focus toward more exclusively song-based compositions, cut largely from unabridged electric and acoustic guitar.

Ignatz’s songs stem from a familiar stripped folk framework, with Devens’ delivery recalling the louche primitivism of V.U. or Henry Flynt - but these songs sound inverted, cast adrift, their cool touch belying a stymied heat beneath the surface. Where Devens’ fretwork is adorned, it is executed with a refined coarseness. Autonomous loops entwine each other. Songs brush past percussion, bass notes, or a scant keyboard motif. A voice recedes from the heart of the song into a dislocated, cracked drawl. And yet if Ignatz does occasionally recall the ghost of Jandek, there are moments of warmth and beauty, as sunlight glistens on the ice.

Almost diaristic in tone, Devens’ personal experiences echo throughout the albums artwork and the title itself, as well as the music. “The artwork is a drawing of a dog, a boxer called Gibbe. It is a drawing by myself from 1994 made in Budapest, Hungary, just after Gibbe died at the age of 13 from meningitis. A family holiday went bad. Because we did not want to leave him in Hungary we decided to wrap him in plastic and tie him on the roof of the car and drive back to Belgium (which took us 2 days and the body started to smell). This was the last holiday I spent with my parents, and this moment defined the end of my childhood, more then any other”.
