DJ Jedi 93-95 Jungle Studio Mix, February 2014

I recently found a whole bunch of mixes I did between 1992 and 1997 and have started the long process of ripping the cassettes to mp3.
As I work through them in no particular order I’ll put them up for download.
Remember the sound quality isn’t great as they were all recorded on belt drive decks through a mixer with no EQ and committed to cassette on a shabby home stereo…But what the hell, it’s that authentic 90s sound through and through.

This one is from 1993. This mixing is terrible but the tunes are great. The track list is lost in the mists of my memory I’m afraid but maybe one of you can ID all the tracks.

Solid Steel (19th September) Coldcut start the show this week, taking Timber for an acid workout with Jack Frost, followed by Francis Bebey remixed by Daphni, Bambounou and classic Fela which coincides with the excellent Finding Fela documentary in cinema's now. Then we take a journey back to 1987 as Coldcut deconstruct their classic first release 'Say Kids What Time Is It?' and rebuild with the original samples and more, for an archeology extended version. 
Jon More from Coldcut had this to say 'It started by pulling out the original records to photograph - then its…. lets put this back together and I dug out the four track - slung it all in the computer & it ballooned out -  enjoy the old skoolness'

S.P.Y - Essential Mix @ BBC Radio1 - January 2015

Klute's taste and the man's command of intricate, rowdy and yet still quite slinky drum & bass music has long had him up on the underground pedestal. His Commercial Suicide label, as the name suggests, takes risks on releasing music for (and by) people who appreciate the finer workings of face paced, jungle influenced soundsystem music. But that doesn't mean that what he makes, releases and plays is necessarily a combination of any of those things. And whilst I appreciate that there's a sense of sweeping disregard in that last statement, there was definitely meant to be - Klute's consistently remained relevant by being resolute, sticking to his guns and working with music he believes in. 

That concentrated focus is undoubtedly one thing he shares with a lot of people who run a lot of record labels - or run their own operations for the upkeep of their own sanity - but when you think about the legacy of drum & bass, which is by design quite a young genre, there's a real synergy between Klute's operation and that of Goldie's Metalheadz label. Fastidious and committed to the advancement of their chosen form of music, the two parties feel like they were made for each other; which is why we're stoked to welcome Klute to the next Metalheadz takeover of Room One on 1st May. His appearance on that lineup really does tick a whole lot of d&b boxes, so we reached out and asked him if he wanted to do something to mark the occasion. He did this...

After meeting LA native Guy Fridge for the last edition of Functions Of The Now, we move across the Atlantic to hit up Paul Purcell in Dublin, the man behind one of our favourite labels: Glacial Sound. On the cusp of its fifth release, it’s testament to Glacial Sound’s precision that with just a handful of records scattered across the last two years it’s become one of the most essential labels in the current grime landscape. Thus far it’s been home to the EPs that solidified Rabit and Murlo’s respective sounds as well as pushing them to the forefront of the modern grime scene, a white label containing Logos’ most potent dancefloor cuts to date and of course legendary MC Riko Dan’s underground anthem Black Dragons. On his FOTN Purcell has crafted a companion piece to the forthcoming Sharp Veins debut Inbox Island, whilst dropping some hints as to where the label might go next: you'll have to hunt though, as the tracklist is heavily redacted. Recorded on the anniversary of JFK's assassination and 21 years after their historic '92 New Year mix on Kiss 100 FM, Coldcut meets The Orb inna Uptown Youth House for the Return Trip. Matt Black and Jonathan More alongside studio accomplice Dor Wand got suitably enhanced with Dr LX Paterson and Youth for a multi-player late night jam session lasting over 3 hours. They then entrusted the multitracks of the set to DJ Food who heroically edited, condensed and massaged the sprawling swamp of sound into a tight - but also loose - 2 hour Solid Steel session.

Swimming through the mix are Lee Perry, Killing Joke, Sun Ra, William Burroughs, Teebs, Ry Cooder, Actress, Prince Jammy, Iggy Pop, Monty Python, Hank Williams and Hal 9000. Alongside unreleased dubs from the players themselves, remixes and versions of tunes old and new, the complete track listing for this marathon set may never be fullly disclosed. It's 2 hours, 10 minutes of sonic secrets to melt your mind, probably best listened to in headphones late at night with all suitable facilities for the full effect. Enjoy this trip.
