Metroscape member B.Hopeful kicks off our mix series with a journey through his catalog of breaks and dub techno. You can catch B.Hopeful playing anything from a chilled-out dub and reggae set at section 8 one night to a slamming 150 BPM trance set the next, and(mostly) everything in-between. While his influences are drawn from far and wide, he's a strong advocate for the local producers here in Naarm.

B.hopeful has been a spectator within the scene for some time, having worked at Boney during the days of Lost Weekend and witnessing the likes of CC Disco, Merve, Myles Mac, Simon TK, Colette and Jennifer Loveless (just to name a few) grow into the amazing DJ's and producers that they are today.

B.Hopeful then stepped out of the bar to run his own smaller club nights at the Gaso, booking act such as Reptant, Rudolf C and Shedbug before their eventful rises to international success. He draws from these experiences as well as his time living in Europe when putting together his sets, aiming to create a seamless journey through sonic stimulation.

Escapism series 001: Billy Hopes

Disgrays has been steadily making a name for herself within Naarm's dance scene (and it isn't for no reason). Her love for hard relentless techno paired with trance has heads turning and dance floors churning.

Supporting acts including Hyper Binary and DJ Ali under the Haptic and Al Gharib crews, Disgrays continually proves that her music choices are not to be slept on.

"I first made this mix earlier this year after i bought a bunch of music on a Bandcamp Friday and felt super inspired. it’s interesting thinking back to that time because it felt like we were out of the darkness of covid and life had just started to feel normal again. now that we are back in lockdown, I re-recorded it and even tho this has been said a hundred times, it was really nice to play these tracks and remind myself that lockdown won’t be forever and we will get to dance together real soon."

Escapism Series 002: Disgrays

Originally from the UK and now based in Melbourne, Petra has been establishing her taste for collecting old and new dance records from a young age. With the organic progression to finally buying decks before the pandemic struck, Petra has been honing her mixing throughout lockdown.

"The dancefloor feels so far away right now, so I wanted to make a mix using some really (I think) beautiful sounding tracks that are reminiscent of spring and emerging from winter misery. I wanna take the listener on a vibey lil journey that hopefully puts a bit of a spring in your step during a tough time x" 

Petra’s effortless selection is exactly what the doctor (or in our case, the Chief Health Officer) ordered. With a perfect combination of sun-soaked disco, smooth house and sneaky moments of techno, this mix is chill when you want it to be and hype when you need it most. Escapism Series 003: Petra

Over the last 7 years, Discarnate has solidified himself within Naarm’s dance music scene.  Since moving from the Gold Coast, Discarnate has brought across influences from his background in the hardcore scene to embrace the hard and raw industrial side of techno. 
As one of two founding members of PLEXUS, the Naarm based dance party has hosted world class acts such as I Hate Models and Ansome, as well as local legends Honeysmack and Matt Radovich.
Discarnate hasn't shied away from production either. His recent releases have been featured on labels such as Insane Industry, Subrosa Records, with a debut EP on Hungarian label PUREHATE. Further building upon the unshakeable power and ruthlessness of his sound, he has teamed up with the agency Rave Insane. Discarnate has his sights set on ravaging the dance floors of the post-pandemic international stage. 
"After close to 2 years of lockdowns and many gigs cancelled or postponed, I’d lost all inspiration towards music and mixing. It’s been quite a difficult thing to deal with and there’s nothing more I want than to be able to play to a crowd again. I’ve selected tunes, that resonate with my feelings towards covid and the fact we can’t all dance together. This mix is made with all the lockdown home ravers in mind. Turn the lights out, play it loud and dance around the house!"

Escapism Series 004: Discarnate

Doesn’t matter whether you know him as Reggae Ambassador, PIJIU or Patty Gu, one thing everyone agrees on is that he’s one of the most versatile selectors behind the wheels (whether it be turntables, CDJs or a live setup).

Hailing from Auckland and with a background in classical training, PIJIU has stamped himself as a staple within Naarm’s music and dance scene. If you aren’t a fan already, you will be after this mix made of all-vinyl delights. It is an absolute pleasure to present one of Metroscape’s very own. Enjoy the deep grooves of PIJIU xx

Determination and conviction are the pillars that shape Mia Fête, a Chilean artist now based in Naarm.

Mia Fête's style is influenced by the feminine side and underground environment of Berlin, where artists such as SPFDJ, Nur Jaber, MOIA and Clara Cuvé stand out for their inspiration and creation. These influences have allowed Mia to create her own unique sound and style.

We are hyped to have none other then DJ Beans Daniel on this one!

Having played at a spicy selection of parties around Naarm over the last three years (in which he dropped one of the best sets of the night at Wiser's Dazed party earlier this year), DJ Beans Daniel has quickly built up a solid reputation for playing hard, fast and unrelenting genre-bending bliss. 

Their mixes will keep you guessing: be prepared to hear a bit of dubstep, DnB, techno and (of course) early 2000's RnB remixes!
