In this special edition of Talking MEWShop, Josh talks with "Nosferatu" Director Robert Eggers, Cinematographer Jarin Blashcke, and Editor Louise Ford, ACE. "Nosferatu" journey as a project for Robert began a decade ago, driven by a passion for storytelling. The team collaborates closely, using a shorthand communication style to enhance workflow. They talk about aiming to evoke tension and dread and using these tools to impact viewers significantly. They also discuss how early editing and feedback refine the narrative, while individual inspirations from each team member enrich the film's aesthetic. The conversation touches on sound design, editing techniques, and the importance of psychological depth in storytelling.

Robert Eggers (Writer-Director, Producer) is an award-winning writer and director. Originally from New Hampshire, Eggers got his professional start directing and designing experimental and classical theatre in New York City. Eggers eventually transitioned to film, directing several short films and working extensively as a designer for film, television, print, theater, and dance. "The Northman," a Viking revenge saga starring Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgård, premiered in 2022 to great critical acclaim worldwide. "The Witch," his feature film debut as writer and director, won the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic category at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered to critical acclaim. It also garnered two Independent Spirit Award wins for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay.

His second feature film, "The Lighthouse," starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, premiered at Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes and won the FIPRESCI prize. The film was nominated for a 2019 Academy Award® for Best Cinematography.

Jarin Blashcke (Cinematographer) is best known for his work with long-time collaborator Robert Eggers. "Nosferatu" marks their sixth film together, after 2022's Viking epic "The Northman". For the striking black-and-white imagery of 2019’s "The Lighthouse," he was nominated for an Academy Award, and a BAFTA, as well as winning the American Society of Cinematographers’ Spotlight Award and the Independent Spirit Award for best cinematography. For his distinctive, low-light work on Eggers’ feature debut "The Witch," Blaschke was selected as one of Variety’s “10 Cinematographers to Watch” for 2015, and one of “The 13 Breakthroughs of the Sundance Film Festival” by MovieMaker magazine. His other films include M. Night Shyamalan’s "Knock at the Cabin," Rodrigo Cortés’ "Down a Dark Hall," and "Black Roads," the directorial debut of actor Alex Pettyfer. 

"Nosferatu" is the fourth feature film Louise Ford, ACE, has edited for Robert Eggers since their first collaboration in 2008 on his short film, "The Tell-Tale Heart." She edited Eggers’ The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman. Other films she has edited include "Don’t Breathe," "Wildlife," and three films with the director Cory Finley - "Thoroughbreds," "Bad Education," and "Landscape with Invisible Hand."

Michael Canzoniero is an award-winning director, producer, and cinematographer who has worked in a range of mediums. His first narrative feature Wedding Bros (which he co-wrote and directed) premiered at the SXSW Film Festival ‘09 and his follow-up feature Don Peyote had a 30-city theatrical release.  He recently wrote, produced and directed the comedy feature film “Making the Day.”

He is the owner of MCM CREATIVE Manhattan-based production and postproduction facility in Chelsea.  They produce television, documentary, indie features and commercials (https://www.mcmcreativeproductions.com).

"Talking MEWShop" Episode 5 features Editors Jeffrey and Zach Wolf, along with Manhattan Edit Workshop Founder Josh Apter, President Jason Banke, and Raphi Salem of Salem Global. 

In this episode Jeffrey and Zach Wolf share their backgrounds and journeys as two different generations of Editors. Jeffrey discuss his influences, including Barry Malkin and DeDe Allen and Zach talks about growing up with a feature film Editor as a Dad and what he has learned from him. They also talk about the impact of COVID-19 on the editing industry, their current projects, and the importance of multiple skill sets in editing.

As an editor, Jeffrey Wolf, ACE, is recognized for his film work with prominent directors Arthur Penn, John Sayles, John Waters, Ted Demme, Lasse Hallström, Brad Anderson, Debbie Reinisch and  George C.Wolf.  Some of his films include "Billy Madison," "Beautiful Girls," "The Ref," "Life," "Holes," and "Dear John."  The film "Bachelorette" and "A.C.O.D." played at the 2012 and 2013 Sundance Film Festivals.  Jeff finished "You’re Not You" starring Hilary Swank and Emmy Rossum last year, and recently completed the film The Outskirts coming out in 2015.

As a Director of Documentaries, he made the acclaimed documentary film "James Castle: Portrait of an Artist," and is currently in production on "Bill Traylor: Chasing Ghosts."

Zach Wolf was born and raised on the Upper West Side in New York City.  After graduating from New York University Tisch School of Film and TV, Wolf pursued his love of filmmaking through editing, something he observed first-hand watching his father splice film. Wolf has worked on many feature films, including "The Woman in the Window," "BlackKklansman," and "The Big Sick." He’s edited various shorts highlighted by the Funny or Die video “What’s Next for Jack Antonoff,” directed by Mike Birbiglia and the innovative “Vice News Tonight” for HBO. In between feature films, Wolf has made numerous short documentaries about outsiders and self-taught artists, an interest he developed at a very young age. He is the co-director of "The Dukha" (Mountainfilm 2023).

Talking MEWShop Episode 1: Founder & President of Manhattan Edit Workshop

MEWShop’s one-day post-production summit returned to New York on Saturday, June 14th, 2014, at the Florence Gould Hall at the French Institute.  This panel focuses on the career of OOscar-winning and Steven Spielberg's legendary feature film editor Michael Kahn, ACE ("Jurassic Park," "Schindler's List," "Raiders of the Lost Ark") with author and film historian Bobbie O’Steen.

Michael Kahn, ACE has won three Academy Awards® for his editing of films directed by Steven Spielberg: "Schindler's List,  "Saving Private Ryan" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." He has also received nominations for "Lincoln," "Munich," "Fatal Attraction" (for which he won a British Academy Award), "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Empire of the Sun."  Kahn has worked on a wide variety of films, including "Jurassic Park," "Amistad," "War Horse," "Alive," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Minority Report," "The Color Purple," "The Goonies," "Poltergeist," "War of the Worlds," and "The Adventures of Tin Tin."  He also won an Emmy for his work on the miniseries "Eleanor and Franklin."  Up until his last few projects, Michael was one of the last editors to consistently use actual film to edit when he collaborated with Spielberg.

In 2011, he became the recipient of the American Cinema Editors's Lifetime Career Achievement Award.

Bobbie O'Steen is a writer and film historian dedicated to sharing the editor’s invisible art with students, professionals, and the movie-going public. Educated at Stanford University, she is an Emmy-nominated film editor and the author of two acclaimed books about editing."Cut to the Chase" is based on interviews with her late husband and colleague, legendary editor Sam O’Steen, about his work on such landmark films as The Graduate and Chinatown. Her second book, "The Invisible Cut", deconstructs the editing process of classic films through a cut-by-cut analysis.

O’Steen has hosted evenings honoring master editors involving screening and discussion for UCLA Film and Television Archive's Billy Wilder Theater, Emerson College's Bright Screening Room, NYU’s Cantor Film Center, 92Y Tribeca. She is currently partnered with Manhattan Edit Workshop for her series "Inside the Cutting Room," and she also moderates panels for American Cinema Editors' EditFest. O'Steen has taught graduate film student workshops at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and has recently created an ongoing course entitled "Making the Cut," which is based on her interviews and examines the art and technique of master editors. In addition, she contributes to such publications as Editors Guild Magazine and Cinema Editor Magazine, the latter naming her "Film Editing's Greatest Champion."

Myron Kerstein, ACE, is the Oscar-nominated and ACE Eddie Award-winning film and TV editor, producer, and director. His most recent notable film credits include the smash hit "Wicked," Lin-Manuel Miranda’s "tick, tick…BOOM!," as well as Miranda’s and Jon M. Chu’s film production of "In The Heights." Additionally, he is known for his work on the box office hit, "Crazy Rich Asians," and the Sundance success, "Garden State."

In 2022, Kerstein earned an Oscar Nomination for ‘Best Achievement in Film Editing’ for his work on "tick, tick…BOOM!" Other nominations include the HCA Award, a Satellite Award, as well as a Sierra Award from the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards for his work on "tick, tick…BOOM!." In addition to receiving these nominations, Kerstein recently won ‘Best Editing’ from the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards for "tick, tick…BOOM!," ‘Best Editing’ for "In The Heights" for the San Diego Film Critics Society, and the ACE Eddy Award for ‘Best Edited Feature Film - Comedy’ for his work on "tick, tick…BOOM!" In 2019, Kerstein received his first ACE Eddie Award nomination for ‘Best Edited Feature Film - Comedy’ for his work on "Crazy Rich Asians."

In 2020, Kerstein made his directorial debut in Season 2 of the Apple+ drama, "Home Before Dark." Some of Kerstein’s other credits as editor include HBO’s Golden Globe-winning series "Girls," Showtime’s Emmy Award-winning series "House of Lies," starring Don Cheadle, as well as the feature films "Little Fockers," "Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist," "Fame," and the Cannes and Sundance Film Festival hit Raising "Victor Vargas."

About Bruce Logan, ASC: Bruce Logan, ASC is a two time Emmy Award-winning writer/director, a director of photography, editor, visual effects supervisor, and colorist. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Director’s Guild of America, and the American Society of Cinematography.

He has worked with such legendary directors as Stanley Kubrick, John Huston, Robert Wise, John Frankenheimer, William Friedkin, George Lucas, Jonathan Demme and Joel Schumacher, and Terry Gilliam. He is best known for his work on the seminal science fiction movies of the last half-century.

Born in London, he became a self-taught animator and was hired by Stanley Kubrick to work on "2001: A Space Odyssey" gleaning his first screen credit. He came to California in 1968 and worked as a DP and Visual Effects Supervisor on films, including "Tron," "Star Wars -Episode IV: A New Hope," "Star Trek," "Airplane," "Firefox," "The Incredible Shrinking Woman," "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden," and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

Also, Bruce is a Director/DP of award-winning commercials for Pepsi, GE, Visa, and Chevrolet. He has also made music videos for Prince, Madonna, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, Glenn Frey, Hank Williams, Jr. Bruce’s new film Lost Fare, which he wrote, directed and produced; had a theatrical run in August and was released last month on Amazon Prime and Google play.

About Snehal Patel: Snehal Patel is a film and television professional with over two decades of experience creating content and adapting new technology. He started the first Canon Bootcamp in Los Angeles during the Canon 5D DSLR craze and has over twenty years of experience in cinema. Snehal has lived and worked in Chicago, Mumbai and Los Angeles as a freelance Producer & Director. He was a camera technical salesperson at ARRI, and currently works as the Sales Manager for Cine at ZEISS. He represents the Americas for ZEISS and is proud to call Hollywood his home.

Rob has directed one of the biggest budget episodes of television in history, "The Spoils of War," and one of the most viral moments of modern television, "The Red Wedding." Here with David Leitner, Cinematographer of the critically acclaimed "Trembling Before G-d", serving as moderator, Rob dissects his most recent television work. Rob offers his generous insight into the choices behind his camerawork on "Ray Donovan," "WestWorld," and, of course, "Game of Thrones."

About Robert McLachlan, ASC, CSC:  Robert was born in San Francisco.  He became involved with photography and film at an early age thanks to an artistic father.  Since then, Robert has moved on with unusual ease between television and theatrical films of all sizes.  In the process, winning many awards and amassing hundreds of credits, including close to 50 Theatrical and television movies; as well as over 550 episodes of Television that include "MacGyver" in the late ’80s and the groundbreaking, "Millennium" in the mid’90s. Recently, he shot what is regarded as the most famous episode of TV ever, best known as “The Red Wedding”, in addition to the biggest episode of TV ever made, "The Spoils of War."  Both of these episodes are from the international phenomenon, "Game of Thrones."  His other TV credits include "Westworld" for HBO and Showtime’s critically acclaimed "Ray Donovan."  Along the way, he has returned to wearing both Director and cinematographer hats on the movies "The Golden Compass" and "Dragonball Evolution" on their second units, and more recently, he has directed episodes of "Ray Donovan."

About Mary Jo Markey, ACE: Mary Jo is an accomplished editor in both film and television. After cutting a series of independent films and television movies, Markey began her collaboration with JJ Abrams as one of the editors of the TV series "Felicity" during its first three seasons (1998-2000). Markey then moved over to edit the first two seasons of "Alias," during which she received her first Emmy nomination. Later, in 2005, Markey won the Emmy for Drama Series Editing for her work on the "Lost" pilot. In 2006, Markey’s collaboration with JJ Abrams moved to the large screen with "Mission Impossible III." Their work together continued with the HBO pilot "Anatomy of Hope," 2009’s "Star Trek" (which led to an ACE Eddie nomination), the "Undercovers" pilot, "Super 8," and "Star Trek Into Darkness" in 201

About Bobbie O’Steen: Bobbie is a writer and film historian, dedicated to sharing the editor’s invisible art. She is an Emmy-nominated editor and author of two acclaimed books: "Cut to the Chase," based on interviews with her late husband and colleague, legendary editor Sam O’Steen; and "The Invisible Cut," which deconstructs classic movie scenes through a cut-by-cut analysis. She is a frequent moderator for American Cinema Editors’ EditFest panels and host of her own “Inside the Cutting Room” event series.

She has also taught at the American Film Institute, graduate film workshops at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and has created an ongoing course, “Making the Cut,” based on her interviews with over sixty editors. O’Steen’s next project is a media-rich eBook called "Making the Cut at Pixar" about the editor's pioneering role in computer animation.
