The second loft party mix in the beat series recorded live from Beatfood in Leeds.  Recorded on the RANE 2016 rotary mixer.  It was recorded on the day Nelson Mandela passed and it is dedicated to him.  

It's such a pleasure to play for people who are happy to go with whatever you want to throw at them.  We are trying to honour the loft party legacy while giving our own take on things - no limitations and release your inhibitions.  At Beatfood we all start the evening with food and eat together communally.  Tristan Da Cunha lays the vibes down perfectly for this section of the night usually.  Then we slowly crank it up into a party.  This was the last ever time we could use the Munro House arts space as it is now being developed into studios.  We will miss it for sure, such special times there.

I do feel we tend to take dance music so seriously.  Surely it was fun in the beginning?  This mix is a release for me to play whatever I feel like and let loose. I reckon it would go down a storm at your festive party, I dare them not to dance!

Solid Steel (7th February) In Hour 1 we welcome The Gaslamp Killer to start off the show. It's a mix of some of GLK's favourite current alternative groups specialising in the dark psychedelic side of rock and the harder edged beat music that he loves so much. Plus a couple of world psych classics in the middle, from fast to slow around we go, always a narrative journey with GLK.
DK continues with the beautiful collaboration between Debruit & Alsarah and onto the new Mount Kimbie remix for Kelis on Ninja Tune and the current single by Falty DL. Then it's a track from the Actress album Ghettoville and into the dub mix of classic 80's Boogie from Barbara Fowler, before ending with Cottam and Instra:mental from the last few years.

interview:
subspiele: why did you call the mix “smoke and mirrors”?
irzhik: A long time ago I got into a beautiful venue where they played similar type of music. There I found out about styles like Drone, Dub Techno, Ambient, IDM, Experimental, Noise etc. Usually people would drink tea or smoke hooka there. The place was decorated with mirrors, soft leather couches, the ceiling was low and the lights were dim red…damn, the place was amazing! unfortunately its doors have been shut for several years. So I decided to dedicate this mix to this place, to commemorate all the nice moments I had there.

subspiele: where did you record the mix?
irzhik: I recorded the mix at home. The whole process took three nights:
1. Sorted and compiled music from my collection.
2. Recording.
3. Mastering.
I like to produce music/record mixes at night when it’s calm and with lights turned all the way down. That is exactly the time when my mind is at ease and I can fully dedicate myself to creative work.

subspiele: which is the song that you recently liked the most?
irzhik: Among the records I have bought recently it would be – Portable – Onward (reprise Dimbi)

subspiele: how do you feel now?
irzhik: I feel like I’ll run out of beer soon!

subspiele: how should it go on?
irzhik: I’m going to dig online and maybe find a cool record.
