IN LOVING MEMORY OF JON RUNYON <3



A few months before his passing, Jon sent me an email with this audio in slide 2. 
A piece he called “Blackbird Song”, that he produced and wrote for his 3 year old son. 
You can hear the immense passion in Jon’s singing and guitar playing, which really drives home just how much creating this piece meant to him as a father, as a guardian, and as a protector. 


Shortly after receiving the news, a little voice popped in my head and told me to check through some old emails, because I vaguely remembered seeing something from Jon a few months back, but didn’t remember what it was it.
Thats when I came across this audio project “Blackbird Song” that  he sent me from Bandcamp. 
And I just began to play around, and this song basically wrote itself. 
It really helped me cope a lot. 
And I began to fall in love. 


I was determined at that point to make this collab happen and give Jon’s family & friends a piece of him to hold onto forever, me included. 

I felt a calling on my heart from the universe, to take this idea and transform it into OUR long lost collab 💙


I striped Jon’s vocal and guitar from the original recording and sampled some other ear candy bits, and warped them to fit in time. So, all the guitar and vocals you hear within the track are all Jon, recorded through Jon’s original mic, with his original equipment and in his original space & ambience. 

I wanted to keep them raw while polishing/adjusting them just enough to seamlessly blend them together. 
And, this is the final product 🖤🫶🏼

Michael Helton, known by the rising artist name of MHELT, invites his audience on a journey through the senses with his masterwork of anthemic vocals, emotive swells, and glimmering synths.
