This recording takes you to California's Sierra Nevada, to an ancient grove of Sequoias - the most massive trees on earth. 

Imagine walking around this peaceful place. It is difficult to grasp the size of the forest giants around you. They tower above, reaching for the sky with cinnamon-coloured trunks, often dotted with woodpecker holes. 

You pause to listen; small birds such as Nuthatches, Flycatchers, Brown Creepers, Kinglets, Warblers and Fox Sparrows sing from high in the canopy or among the low shrubs on the forest floor. The drumming of woodpeckers large and small resounds through the forest. This place is certainly heaven for Woodpeckers!

As you meander around the Sequoia grove, you hear other sounds: the piping of a Pygmy-Owl, a Mountain Quail, and the chatter of small mammals; Squirrel and Chipmunks. A party of Stellar's Jays move through, and the dark shape of a Raven swoops overhead on languid wingbeats.

As much as Giant Sequoias are a wonder to see, this grove is also a beautiful place to listen too.

With a wine glass, ornamented in lapis lazuli,
wait for her. With the patience of a horse prepared for mountain slopes,
wait for her. With the courtesy of a refined and splendid prince, 
wait for her.

With the softness of seven pillows filled with clouds, 
wait for her. With the fire of feminine incense that fills the place, 
wait for her, and don’t make haste.


If she arrives behind time,
if she arrives ahead of time, 
wait for her.

Don’t startle the bird resting on her curls, and wait for her
to make herself as comfortable as a garden in full bloom, and wait for her 
to breathe this air that is a stranger to her heart, and wait for her

When she places the glass on the marble top, slowly touch her hand

Rexy - Running Out Of Time

On 28 May 2014, ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman and Russian cosmonaut Maxim Suraev rocketed into space in a Soyuz spacecraft. This was their voyage - in audio.

Strapped atop 274 tonnes of rocket propellants delivering 26 million horsepower, it took only six hours to reach their destination, the International Space Station ISS.

Here is a lovely 6.5 minute soundscape that I just uncovered … two Wood Thrushes singing back-and-forth at dawn, recorded at Land Between the Lakes Kentucky way back in 1995, about the time I began gathering binaural soundscapes. I rather like it and think it’s a powerful reminder of things to come Yep, SPRING is just around the corner. Believe me!

It’s a busy dawn chorus for sure, but if played at a medium to low sound level, it’s fairly gentle on the ears. The recording also features the incessant singing of distant Whip-poor-wills, Barred Owls hooting, Mourning Doves cooing, a woodpecker drumming (probably a Hairy Woodpecker), and plenty more species for the discerning ear.

Wood Thrushes Countersinging

On the top of the mountain, the wind is howling in the old installation of the ski station of Chacaltaya, Bolivia. The station was the highest in the world, and stops a few years ago, because of the smelting of the ice (du to global warming). 
The teleski cable and tube is still there and the wind sing in it! :-)

The more an artist attempts a truthful reflection of the human condition the more conflicts and paradoxes will appear in their work, that’s why the music of El-Morabba is euphoric and deliciously dark; it fills you with an acute sense of elation while the lyrics crash down on you with their intense reality and truth.

It is rebellious music that lends a voice to the thoughts, concerns and anger of the people towards the reality they are living today, yet most of all it lends a voice to a dream that is dormant within us all, nudges it sometimes, or shocks the hell out of it onto the surface in other instances of pure intensity. All of this is translated through music that is uniquely structured; the rhythm, while always holding a firm base of ergonomic structure with the simple yet efficient heartbeat of the bass, it manages to float within it’s own spheres alongside the heavily transformed guitar expressions like two astronauts floating individually away, or towards their shuttle, winking at each other in the realization that they will always reach their destination simultaneously because they’d timed it that way, and they’d done it a billion times before.

Place Language is an international non-profit compilation album project inspired by the themes found in Robert Macfarlane’s widely-acclaimed book ‘Landmarks’. In particular it focuses on the book’s extensive topographic glossaries, the “word-hoard” of depictive landscape terms gathered from 30 different languages, dialects and sub-dialects around Britain & Ireland and divided into sections by type of terrain (Flatlands, Uplands, Waterlands, Coastlands, Underlands, Northlands, Edgelands, Earthlands and Woodlands). Relying on these topograms, or “tiny place poems”, as creative prompts, Place Language seeks to both inspire a renewed interest in our surroundings and reinvigorate our appreciation for the audible textures & patterns that characterize a place in keeping with the book’s stated desire to “re-wild” our vocabulary.

The collection features the work of 28 different sound-artists, field recordists, and musicians from around the globe each of whom selected a Landmarks topogram and recorded an impression of it thus adding rich new aspects of dimensionality through the act of sonification. These selections cover all nine of the book’s glossaries along with place-words of new coinage as prompted by the blank one which Macfarlane leaves at the end of the book for readers to fill in from their own experience. The end result is a truly global and collaborative survey of place, language, and sound.
