certainly not the best bitter but a sketch from this afternoon.

Better Bitter

A celebration of the long suffering lower league footy fan. The song was written as part of a challenge a few of us decided to do on the forum songwriterforum.co.uk. We had to write a song and record it all in a day. The instrumentation had to be one instrument only, plus one vocal line. Simple!

My inspiration was Chesterfield FC, where my Grandad was a turnstile gatekeeper, and he used to take me there as a child. They became Champions of Division Four in 1985, shorty after his death. They have since been relegated out of the football league :(

At Home

All me life been coming down
To this same spot in this old ground
Behind the goals so I could see
This shower of shite in front of me

Cheered me team through thick and thin
But mostly thin, took it on the chin
I’ve stood here moaning, getting tense
We’ve no attack and no defence 

Today the match is haltedp
Pitch invasion by a cat
Our goalie tries to catch it
But our goalie is too fat

The away fans sing
Can we play you every week?
You’re supposed to be at home
Their team score three 
Then they scores four
And we’re not singing anymore
Til some daft prick of ours tries starting

We naturally groan

Four nil down, here comes the rain 
The stand roof’s leaking once again
Oh blow for half time referee
I need a pie and a mug of tea

And with our pies, my mates and me
Recall our glorious history
It might be thirty years and more
But we were champs of Division Four

And on this spot on this terraced slope
Stood with me Dad and clung to hope
Though he passed on, I’m not alone
I bring my lad here to Home

Its a recurring theme, my eyes are bigger than my brain it seems.
She got revenge this time I`ve been shot down but theres been no crime.
I used to pull the heads off daddylonglegs but now I`m going out with girls
And last night karma kicked me where it hurts.

She hid her face with her sleeve.

Well I would call it unexpected..you could call it naive

I`ve travelled far & wide and done some bad things that kept me up all night.
A letter every day is clearly not enough to keep the dogs at bay.
She loved her country music & would often go to clubs alone.
But she was never dancing on her own.

Every week without fail
Well I guess that thats the reason she ain`t been getting my mail.
I would call it unexpected..you could call it naive

I`ve been the architect whos been drawing up the houses of ill-respect
Its a familiar track, you think your futures written but God bites back. 
I used to shoot the heads off salamanders then started going out with girls
And sometimes karma hits you where it hurts.

If theres a moral to the story its that you reap what you sow,
