A choral expression of the sadness and loneliness one might feel when depressed. It's like being submerged underwater with waves of despair crashing over you, keeping you down. You can't breathe, but you can't give up. It's like coming completely apart while trying to hold it together.

Ted Hearne (b 1982) is one of The Esoterics' favorite composers, and a bit of a choral provocateur, One of his more recent pieces, "Fervor" (2018), sets "the truth" in German: "die Wahrheit."

Here's a bit more about "Fervor" from the composer:

This piece is derived from a phrase of music in J.S. Bach’s 1731 motet for double-choir, "Komm, Jesu, Komm" (BWV 229). In this work, Bach mines the responsorial possibilities of the Venetian antiphonal tradition to a stunning extent. Fervor creates an echo chamber from this material, exploring the fusion of response and call. This piece is inspired by the power of repetition to alter perception: a lie that is told over and over again becomes its own kind of truth, or at least stands in for the truth because it becomes impossible to hear anything different.

This concert recording was made on 19 October 2019 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in West Seattle.  The soloists are Brittni Liyanage, Jonathan You, Stephen Elliott, and Octavia McAloon.
