Track 16 - Vocal Quartet no.1 for SATB (April 2025)

This Palm Sunday setting opens slowly building energy as each section of the choir enters capturing the celebration of Palm Sunday. This fully orchestrated score incorporates the hymn "All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name" set to the hymn tune "Coronation". The anthem drives to a triumphant ending.

This song was sung during Palm Sunday service by the Choir of the Mar Thoma Church in Singapore.

The call-and-response section between choir and soloist, the rollicking ostinato featured in the final pages, and the irresistible rhythmic vitality of the choral writing all contribute to a winning anthem that expresses the joy believers share on Easter morning.

The Blessing 

The Aaronic blessing is revisited with a gentle contemporary styling. 
This prayer was sung by the Choir of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in Singapore at the Pastoral Ministry Thanksgiving meeting for our beloved Gino Philip Achen. Rev Gino S Philip served our worshipping community for 4 years (2021-2025) and also as the President of the Church Choir. 

Sung by the Church choir and members of the Praise and worship team, conducted by Susan Anne Koshy.

The Blessing

Cantai! — blending SATB tradition with futuristic electro drama. Powered by deep learning and set to Carl Orff’s iconic “O Fortuna,” this performance reimagines the choir of fate for a new era.

Then Warden, the Rev'd Canon Reginald Stewart DeSaram, who had studied and served as an Anglican Clergyman in the UK thought the College Song by Warden Stone and Mr. deLivera sounded rather similar to the drinking songs in British pubs. Yet, since it was established as the Anthem of the College, it would not be changed. As some consolation, Warden DeSaram invited the Rev Canon Roy Henry Bowyer-Yin, the College Chaplain and Choirmaster at the time, to compose an unofficial anthem which could serve as an alternative to the College Song.
This composition of Rev Yin was either never written down but taught to his students and passed on, or the manuscripts were simply lost to time. Either way, at present there is no written melody or harmony, but only what has been passed down through the generations - leading to some disagreement on a melodic phrase.
This is my idealization of Rev Yin's music, using irregular harmony to enrich the soulful and deeply emotional nature of this piece, written for a small ensemble of strings, winds, brass, and a SATB choir.

Alone Together, commissioned by the Jordan High School Choir directed by Juan-Jose Garcia II, sets the poignant poem written by the commissioner, Juan-Jose Garcia II. The musical setting begins with a dark, somber four note motive that is split between the Violin & Cello, perhaps representing two people separated by circumstance. There is an occasional 3/4 measure to imply a feeling of longing and incompleteness. The piece starts to shift into a more hopeful tonality at Section D, as the narrator experiences "a presence, all powerful, ever present". The piece blossoms into a pop-infused Chorus at Section G, where we realize that we may feel alone but we are still together in our hearts.

This piece would fit well in any concert about friendship and/or featuring a Mixed Voice Choir.

My songwriting style is an eclectic blend of pop, country, classical, and folk. I love every kind of music and try to bring that open mind to every song I write.
