The crux of Howlaround was formed way back when Tim and Paul first crossed paths in 2005, thanks to their mutual appreciation of a particular kind of rock music that effectively rendered them lepers within the single-sex confines of Salesian College in Chadstone.Those cold winter nights (and poorly-timed summer uniforms) were made a little more bearable when the two realised they could play music to keep warm and stave off hypothermia.

Though initially a classically-trained Mark Hoppus impersonator, the teenaged Tim jumped instrumental ship to guitar after concluding that singing while strumming a six-string would really stick it to 'The Man' - also, don't frontmen usually make more money...?
Paul, however, kept true to his drumming dreams because it enabled him to hit big things really hard with sticks and make a whole lotta noise. It also helped that he was pretty good at it.

A bunch'a bassists (and even a guitarist or two when Tim was still on bass) made their way though the revolving doors of the three-piece band once called Youthanasia, then Desiderata, and finally The Shiv Merchants: gigs were played, hearts were slayed, and virtually no income or fans were made but they were trying, dammit!

Over the last year and a bit, the two ol' pals have really taken this whole music thing to task (cocaine's a helluva drug), recording some demos and performing under the Howlaround moniker as a two-piece in late 2014/early 2015, eventually stumbling upon the super-bassist Yogi mid-March of this year. Since then, the band's been sounding better than ever - Yogi's been blitzing it in rehearsals and buoying the band with his killer attitude; Paul's been giving Dave Grohl and Travis Barker a run for their money (plus he's even been waking up before 6 pm) and Tim's been a little bit nicer and hasn't studied 'Dictating 101' in weeks.

Well Russ, Jimmy and Hagan went to school together from 2000, and Russ, Jimmy and Richard went to music school together a little bit later on. One night even later than that (late 2010 or early 2011) Russ and Hagan were at some Spanish festival in Melbourne and Russ suggested starting a band. Hagan asked his guitar teacher, who happened to be Jimmy, if he'd come along and in Russ's lounge room the three of us wrote our first song. We called it "Roses at Midnight" and haven't played it for about nine months. You can't forget your roots, no matter how hard you try.

Michael Chrisp joined the band a little bit later in the piece, but we are mighty glad to have him and his sparklin' Flea bass.

In between trying to convince ourselves that there's room for more bands in the world, that this isn't some last ditch attempt to escape the (supposedly) harsh realities of day to day life, and that Russell's energy drink habit won't prematurely end his life/our careers, we write and practice and perform music that's designed to make us feel good. And because feeling good is something that most humans are commonly capable of, it might go some way towards making others feel good too.
