Goiter is a condition characterized by the abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ located in the front of the neck. This enlargement can be caused by various factors, most commonly due to iodine deficiency, which is essential for thyroid hormone production. When the body lacks iodine, the thyroid gland works harder to compensate, leading to its enlargement.

Goiter can also result from other factors, such as thyroid nodules, inflammation, or underlying medical conditions like Graves' disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In these cases, the thyroid gland enlarges due to excessive hormone production or autoimmune responses.

The size of a goiter can vary from barely noticeable to significantly protruding from the neck. While goiters themselves may not be harmful, they can indicate underlying thyroid issues that may require further evaluation and management. Monitoring thyroid health is crucial to ensure proper bodily functions related to metabolism and hormone regulation.
