There were a number of Levites that King David assigned as worship leaders in the tabernacle choir, according to 1 Chronicles 6:31–32. Asaph was one of these men. Both Asaph and David are described in the word as skilled musicians. Asaph is also mentioned as a “seer” or prophet.

Written by the descendants of the rebel Korah, who did not follow after the pattern of their forefather, likely sometime between 1025-950 BC. 

The Sons of Korah were few faithful descendants of the rebellious figure Korah, who rears his head in the Book of Numbers. 

Korah rebelled against Moses and Aaron’s leadership, leading to a divine punishment that included the earth swallowing him, his followers, and (it says) all of his household. 

However, in God’s divine graciousness, some of his offspring, known as the Sons of Korah, remained faithful and were not counted among the household of Korah when he utterly destroyed them from the face of the Earth, and they continued to play significant roles in Israelite society.

As gatekeepers, they were responsible for maintaining order and guarding sacred spaces such as the tabernacle or temple. 

Their faithfulness and adherence to their responsibilities demonstrate their dedication to upholding the sanctity of worship.

They are most notably associated with musical traditions and the composition of psalms. 

The inclusion of the Sons of Korah’s psalms in the biblical canon signifies their recognized importance and spiritual depth, their lasting impact on the worship practices of ancient Israel, as well as the importance of remaining faithful in spite of regrettable family ties.

For no matter whose ancestor you are, the Lord is always ready to accept all who are willing to call upon him with a sincere heart and beg for his mercy.

Ethan of Psalm 89 is a Levite mentioned with his family line in 1 Chronicles 6:44 : “On the left hand were their brothers, the sons of Merari: Ethan the son of Kishi, son of Abdi, son of Malluch…”

It seems that Ethan was still serving during the time of King Solomon, son of David. Ethan was considered very wise. Solomon, the wisest of all, was compared to Ethan: “He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman” (1 Kings 4:31).
