Following the successful performance of his ‘Requiem Londinium’, Bern-based musician Lee Schornoz from Fribourg is back with a new album: ‘13 Black Country Greats’ was created with his long-time companion Zeno Tornado on vocals. He is joined by his brother André Schornoz on bass and Zoë-Më drummer Adrian Mahler. In ‘Wastelands (Deep Inside)’, the Italian Ida Elena sings a moving duet together with Zeno. Debbie Miller, who lives in Zurich and Northern Ireland, contributes her backing vocals to some of the songs.

The new album celebrates dark country, a form of country that seems to emanate from the loudspeakers of dark bars and foggy clubs rather than people line-dancing to it in a marquee. All the songs on the new record were written by Lee's former hard rock band ‘King Louis’, with whom he released two records. Lee rewrote all the arrangements and lyrics while preparing to perform his requiem between 2022 and 2023. He produced the recordings single-handedly in his Fribourg studio Caliber Club 2.0.

Although dark or ‘black’ country seems to sound like a newer musical form, when it comes to vocals, guitar and accompaniment, it's all conventional fare: Lee has been touring as a sideman and guitarist with his fellow musician from Bern under the name ‘Zeno Tornado & Fast Louiez’ since 2018. Or both perform on occasion with their joint band ‘The Ill Eagles’. With both formations, they present genuine traditional country from the 60s and 70s. In addition to their own compositions, they play songs by Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams III.

Zeno Tornado and Lee Schornoz are releasing a further 13 songs written by the singer in parallel to this album this year. Adrian Mahler will once again be on drums, while Christian Sommerhalder from Bern will pluck the bass. The record will be released on the renowned Bernese label Voodoo Rhythm Records, where Zeno already released three vinyl albums with Zeno Tornado & The Boney Google Bros in the 00s.

In the meantime, Lee Schornoz is already taking the next step musically: he will soon be presenting the songs he composed with his brother during coronavirus in an Afro-pop guise live: with his new formation ‘Lee Schornoz & Freedom Of Birds’, he will be performing at the ‘Senslerfest’ at Château Bohème in Tentlingen. He will be bringing together up to 10 musicians from Senseland, Moldova and Ukraine.
