Heart of the Shamans is a divinely crafted sonic prayer, a ritual transport into the heart of the universe. The finely tuned arrangements of music producer Amani Friend are skillfully interwoven with threads of global rhythms, natural atmospheres and enchanting vocals, arousing in the listener a desire to merge with the medicine of the soul. Heart of the Shamans intentionally evokes a cyclical, visionary journey through the body’s energy centers, and is a tapestry of sound, inspirited with ancient lineages and ancestral depths; from the ceremonial dances in the deserts and pueblos of New Mexico to the traditions of the Amazon jungles. 

Heart of the Shamans features ceremonial medicine songs intended for healing and trance journeying. The outstanding sound artists who contributed to this project are some of the same as in the first Liquid Bloom album, Shaman’s Eye: Robert Mirabal’s Taos flutes and Native chanting; the sacred medicine songs of the vocalist Ixchel Prrisma; the ethereal vocals of Sarah West; the overtone singing of Rara Avis; and the didgeridoo, percussion and nature recordings of Amani Friend, who also provides the overall sound design, production and framework for the compositions and arrangements.

Shaman's Drums combines trance-inducing drums, native flutes and droning didgeridoos in a rousing celebration of shamanic music. The music on this album is based on a simple trio of shamanic instruments: the drum, the flute and the didgeridoo. Each instrument opens a path of communication between the spiritual and earthly realms. Each instrument helps induce trance states, opening the inner, spiritual ear and eye. Each is related to the soul, which extends far beyond the physical body, connecting us to the symphony of the universe.

The sound of the shaman's drum is very important, for it is a voice with great power and it is a voice that is a gift to us from a greater being. Its steady beat is akin to the primal pulse, the heart, throbbing within all that exists. The shaman uses the drum to create a bridge to the spirit world and summon the healing power of spirit.

Aboriginal tradition equates the low-pitched, rhythmic resonance of the didgeridoo with the voice of the Earth itself. According to an Aboriginal Dreamtime legend, the god of creation Baiame created man and woman, giving them the didgeridoo to sound all other life into form. Didgeridoos produce a range of infrasonics; extremely low frequency sound waves that stimulate a wide array of euphoric trance-like states.

The flute is akin to birds, flight and the breath, which is spirit. Its chirp, warble, and bird-like notes make your heart soar. Its sound represents the voice of the birds, the voice of the wind and the voice of the soul -- those things that are free to move and fly. So taken all together this trio; the flute, drum, and didgeridoo, represents the whole voice of Creation.

Michael Drake is an internationally respected writer and recording artist. He is the author of The Shamanic Drum: A Guide to Sacred Drumming, I Ching: The Tao of Drumming, and Shamanic Drumming: Calling the Spirits. His musical albums include Shamanic Journey Drumming and The Shamanic Drum Instructional. His articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Awareness, Sacred Hoop, and Mother Earth News. 

Raised in a conservative Baptist Church, Michael had his first ecstatic experience as a youth at a church revival, an evangelistic meeting intended to reawaken interest in religion. This state of rapture and trancelike elation inspired his spiritual quest for meaning and fulfillment. At a crucial point in his search, Michael came in touch with the transforming power of shamanic drumming and discovered his true calling. Inspired by his research and experiences, Michael founded Talking Drum Publications in 1991 in order to share the healing power of rhythm with the global drumming community.
