I am a scientist who started composing music as a hobby in 2013. I have not studied composition and do not approach it analytically, only intuitively. I took piano lessons in my childhood and teens, but spent most of my adult life without playing piano until 2013. So far I have composed mostly for piano, in a polyphonic style that borrows from the Baroque as well as the Romantic spirit. I describe my style as "Baroquemantic". 

Most of my piano pieces are easy to play.  Some are very easy to play.  

All of my pieces rely on 2 or more concurrent melodies (counterpoint).

A prolific composer (b.1931), my output covers all genres and styles. I am often pigeoholed as a light music composer, but I have written a large number of "serious" solo and chamber music compositions and my orchestral works include three symphonies in addition to much light music. Choral music ranges from works for youth choirs and orchestra to commissions for major choirs (e.g. Huddersfield Choral Society), I have also written extensively for young performers and pieces in that category frequently appear in ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall syllabuses. After taking  music degrees at Oxford University and national service with the Royal Signals Band, most of my working life was spent as a music lecturer -  first at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and then, for 33 years, at the University of Hull.
