My composition # 32:
Back to ghazals. The more I read Faiz ahmad Faiz’s poetry, the more I become his fan. I decided to try my hand at composing one of his famous ghazals - “aaye kuch abr kuch sharaab aaye”. This is one of my favorite tunes so far for my con filmi ghazal compositions. 

Q for listeners:

1. There are 3 antaras that I gave 3 different tunes to. Which one did you like the most?
2. Do you see direct correlation between the notes I chose and the meaning in any one of the couplets - and if so which one?

Reproducing only the shers I sang below with meanings of some urdu words

abr - cloud, 
azaab - torment/agony/pain
baam-e-mina - terrace of wine decanter
mahtaab - moon
aaftaab - sun
dast-e-saqi - hand of the wine server
rag-e-khoon - veins of blood (bloodshot veins)

Ali Sethi is a Lahore-born writer and musician. A graduate of Harvard College, he is the author of the acclaimed debut novel ‘The Wish Maker’ and a contributor to The New York Times op-ed page. Ali is also a classically trained vocalist. He made his singing debut on Season 8 of Coke Studio Pakistan and was featured on the soundtracks of Mira Nair’s ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ (2013) and Sarmad Khoosat’s ‘Manto’ (2015). Presently Ali is making a documentary film and working on his second book.
