In the summer of 2016, I had the chance to work with a high school friend of mine, Elisabeth Kiger. Elisabeth and I met each other while attending Wheeling Park High School - she was a soprano in the school choir, I was a flutist in the band. Somehow, we never managed to collaborate until somewhat recently - on an album project I'm working on for a mutual friend, Dan Evick. (more about that later)

This is a project that emerged during the Evick sessions and has nothing to do with that project (which is much more extensive - again, more about that later!). It is a collaborative effort with Elisabeth and her friend Julia Porado. Both are amazing singers in her own right, but quite different; Elisabeth has got an operatic set of lungs that can bring the house down weeping, Julia's voice is a lot more subtle and folky. Earthy. Both can be break your heart in their own way, as I'm sure you will agree!

It started with me showing Elisabeth a favorite instrument of mine, the mellotron, which is a sort of primitive sampling device designed to emulate an orchestra. It missed the mark, but in the meantime developed a spooky sound all its own. Julia provided the ukulele which we agreed embodied a strangely ancient sound in this context, especially with the ladies' vocal harmonies applied on top. Instant Greek chorus!

I wrote this instrumental medley of meandering melodies on a summer afternoon in San Francisco. I was imagining what it must have been like for my grandmother Fabienne when she was growing up as a child in Belgium and France prior to WWI. I performed this song on a 2015 Taylor 614ce, which I recorded live direct into Ableton. Still trying to figure out words for the story and if they might be sung in French.
