Originally recorded by George Jones in 1970, the version I first heard of this song was by Elvis Costello for his 'Almost Blue' album in 1981.
I remember thinking "what a weird and wonderful song for Elvis to sing". It was such a departure from 'Watching The Detectives' and his usual edgy sound. It took me a while to figure out that this wasn't an Elvis Costello song at all. It seemed to come from a very different place altogether, a more grown up place somehow. The song describes the thoughts of a man as his wife is preparing to leave him. How this could relate to a 16 year old is beyond me but it sure resonated with me, anyhow. The true sign of a great song! (or maybe I was just a bit too melodramatic as a teenager).
I recorded this version in my attic studio outside of Hamburg in September 2020. Hope you like it. D
