"An acoustic guitar and an expressive voice, that's all you need, to make great music!" That is the opinion of German musician Michael Rogge. "I always liked how these loud rock songs sound when they were played as acoustic versions. Sometimes they transport a totally different mood, than their louder counterparts." That's how he came up with the idea to make his own acoustic cover songs. "There are many songs which were played as an acoustic version, that I really liked and I just wanted to make my own versions of them. But there are also many songs that were never played as an acoustic version; therefore, I can create something new." So he spends his spare time with working out acoustic versions of songs from his preferred music genres Rock, Post-Grunge, Hard rock and Metal. But these weren't always his favorite genres, he says, when he was young, his music taste was totally different. "In the mid-90's, when I was a teen, I listened to a lot of Techno. The German band Scooter was one of my favorites. After a few years, my music taste changed to Pop-Music. I listened to, and yes I know this is very unusual for a man, the Backstreet Boys a lot. That's when I started singing. Learning by Doing was the issue and I did it extensively wherever I could!" But singing wasn't enough for him. Though, it wasn’t love at first sight and he was really bad in music at school, now he wanted to go deeper into the theme of music and he started to learn an instrument. "In my early twenties the idea came up to learn playing guitar. So, I bought one of these cheap beginner sets. It included a Squier Showmaster with a Fender Amp, Guitar Cable, Picks and a DVD to learn the first steps. Again, it was Learning by Doing! After I worked my way through the DVD, I trawled the Internet for more learning material.” About his guitar playing skills, he is very honest. "I would say, I play quite decent, but I'm not that superb like "Slash" or one of the other legendary guitarists.” Michael is a real do-it-yourself man. Even his recordings were made by himself, but the way to the first good sounding recordings were long and winding. "Yes, the recordings were made by me in my little room. Again, the motto was Learning by Doing. From recording-based things like room acoustics, equipment and microphone position to production-based things like mixing and mastering, I sucked up every piece of information I could get from the internet. The first recordings were OK, but I'm a perfectionist and I always want to get the best out of everything I do. So, it was a steady process of trial and error, searching the internet for new tips and tricks and then start all over again. It can be frustrating sometimes. After all that, I must admit, that these Mixing and Mastering engineers are geniuses. I often grabbed at my head, when I saw a new mixing technique. But I'm getting better from day to day. I just keep going on and won't let failures get me down." So you see, music takes a big part in his life, but a musician needs to clear his mind with other things. In addition to the music, he has a lot of other hobbies. "I love to swing dumbbells around! Yes, fitness plays a big role in my life, too. It has to, if you want to be successful. Also, I'm a big fan of movies and series. I watch a lot of them. And, of course, I play video games." He's very clear when it comes to his next musical step. "The next logical step could only be writing own songs. I don't want to be the guy who just sings songs of others. I want to create my own stuff. All this "covering-thing" is just a huge practice. I know songwriting isn’t easy, but maybe I should consider “Learning by Doing” for this part. HAHA!" So we are excited to see what we hear from him in the future.
