The Pacifica Foundation was founded in 1949 as a visionary alternative to commercialy-driven media. We pioneered listener-sponsored, community radio and have been a beacon for noncommercial, free media.
The Pacifica Network includes five sister stations in New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Berkeley, and Houston along with many affiliated independent radio stations throughout the United States.

As Lehigh’s largest college, the College of Arts and Sciences is home to the social sciences, arts, humanities, and natural sciences. About: hailed as the “Alur queen” the Ugandan singer-songwriter Suzan Kerunen has been enchanting audiences with her music done in her local Ugandan language of Alur-Jonam, (her Luo mother tongue), Kiswahili, English and French. Kerunen’s sound is inspired by a mix of njige, agwara and ndara drums from her Alur-Jonam (central Luo) people of Nebbi district in the West Nile sub-region of northern Uganda, located on the north-western shores of Lake Albert, western banks of the River Nile, and bordering north-eastern DR Congo. 

Kerunen was described by the Daily Monitor newspaper “.......as musically great and arguably one of the most respected world music artists in Uganda” — following the release of her critically acclaimed Nimefika album which earned her a double nomination at the 2008/2009 Kora all African music awards www.koraawards.org. 

Kerunen was described as “Kampala’s new voice” by The EastAfrican newspaper after she was awarded as the Best Folk Pop Artist at the 2010 PAM awards (Pearl of Africa music awards). Her unique music and style gives her agility with freedom of expression in Alur as well as English, Kiswahili and French.  
Kerunen started her career as a young girl with her two sisters in an all girl group called Soul of Africa in 2004. She later went on to launch her solo career with her debut album “Nimefika” a Kiswahili word meaning “I have arrived” in 2006.  “LEK” her second album meaning “Dream” celebrates African diversity, beauty and culture.”
Kerunen’s music offers a bold cultural statement through which all of her ancestral influences from Nebbi-Junam and Zombo Palwo come to life.  You will also hear a blend of East African and West African ambience, through teasers of zouk, Congolese and Afro-soul grooves emerging as a soulful expression of colour and the beauty of Ugandan rhythms which will surely over power your mind.  Her music explores sounds like the talking drum (tamur) from West Africa; African marimbas (Akogo), tube fiddle (Ndingidi), Adungu and the Nanga (Ugandan harp). Kerunen’s music preserves within it ancient musical traditions yet is delivered with a contemporary vibrancy reflective of her various urban multicultural music scene influences.

Kerunen’s music is truly dedicated to her Alur influences from both Ugandan and Congolese culture.  Her music clearly spells the desire to break all cultural boundaries that have kept people divided. It is rooted in a compelling call to come together irrespective of our backgrounds to share our single human journey. Kerunen’s music is a universal message of peace, love, unity and culture that has established her as one of the new voices in African music. 

This accomplished vocalist has been steadily rising on the world music scene and appearing online and on radio waves including BBC Network Africa, RFI and DW. She has performed around the world including the Bayimba International Festival of the Arts, Pearl Rhythm Festival, International Jazz Festival in Kampala, Kora all Africa awards, plus a number of East African events including ONGEA Nairobi 2016.
