Michael Forrest has hooked up with us here at DT for the grand unveiling of his track ‘Infinite London’ s rework from fellow rising stars Chik Budo complete with trademark sax appeal to celebrate the release of his app based album earlier in the month.

An app based album? What is that? we hear you cry, well wonder no more as we’ve got the skinny on how it works so here it is: Instead of releasing this music as fixed recording, Forrest composes musical structures in code and chance, creating a listening experience that is different every time. This form of musical expression, never feasible as a release format before the age of smart phones, moves into worlds first explored by Brian Eno and Bjork - Forrest’s work here proves that there is still much to be discovered.
 
The app itself allows listeners to influence the music, as well as to save and share their favourite moments - moments that would otherwise be lost forever in the infinite possibilities. Anybody who doesn’t have a supported smart phone or tablet can hear one possible route through the album as a 60 minute mix on SoundCloud.

"This is a song about how you can't reason with some people. I think we're all feeling like this a lot more recently as we attempt to understand the reasons many people voted for Trump or Brexit. To me, their slippery logic is reminiscent the sort of paranoia and conspiracy theorising I'd usually associate with serious mental illness. A mistrust of the mainstream media has transformed into wholesale dismissal of evidence-based discussions - with people making convoluted connections to justify their theories. We also have to contend with this insidious 'reverse bigotry', 'reverse racism', 'reverse sexism' rhetoric used to attempt to wriggle out of responsibility for spreading regressive ways of understanding people and the world.

I think a lot of it comes back to confirmation bias - we look for the reasons we feel bad. If people felt happier they wouldn't be doing this. The reasons that the West's happiness has plummeted in recent years are manifold and complex. There are no easy answers. It's more important than ever before to defend humanitarian, inclusive, globalist values, and to construct our belief systems accordingly. We are in crisis as the new architects of widely adopted beliefs are not motivated by these values, but by narcissism and a grotesque drive to arbitrarily simplify the world no matter who pays the price."

MF Tuesdays #8

I recorded this one with Reason - first time I've used it since it got audio recording features. I also bought a couple of cymbals, a shaker and a snare drum to add to this track. This meant I had to also get a filing cabinet and assemble that before disassembling my desk and packing that away to make space for the drums. I think it was just about worth it though. 

Also it was my birthday yesterday and I was at Field Day / Apple Cart over the weekend so didn't have a lot of time this week! Hence no vox. And the Tortoise influence.
