Conclave’s self-titled debut has been hailed as one of 2021’s best, described as “magnificent” by Resident Advisor, “a vibrant house album that beautifully celebrates rhythms, collaboration and musical history.” The brainchild of New York City-based vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cesar Toribio, it is that rarity in dance music: a conceptual project that never lets ideation (specifically, a celebration of the Afro-Latin clave rhythm as a transcendent musical key) impede its primary motive of putting bodies in motion.

Now with Conclave – The Remixes EP, four of Conclave’s finest tracks are imaginatively re-invented across five remixes by Photay, musclecars, Jenifa Mayanja and Mike Simonetti. The resulting sounds represent an extended play in the truest sense: a continuation of the spirit of Toribio’s explorations that adventurously takes the original compositions into welcome and unexpected territory.

Photay’s “All That I Need (Remix)” brilliantly sets the tone. Anchored by an irresistibly syncopated percussive line, it accumulates perfectly placed rhythmic layers and accents, then drops in Cesar and sister Sharin Toribio’s sparse vocals amidst touches of haunting modulating organ and Bernie Worrell-esque synth squeals, all while largely dispensing with traditional basslines. It’s an intoxicatingly moody (re-)arrangement, reflective of Photay’s uncanny ability to generate momentum and evoke stillness at once. And it’s reprised in a more stripped down iteration for his lovely Photay Lullaby Remix, which dials back the percussion and plays up a simple thumb piano melody from the song’s beautifully bridge for maximum emotional resonance.

Together these re-imaginations accomplish what every remix project ideally aspires to: present the songs in exciting new contexts while reaffirming one’s appreciation for the original material. Listen, relax, and stay a while longer.

Known for crafting infectious rhythms infused with an otherworldly strangeness, UK-based producer CAIN makes his debut on Darker Than Wax with Sarissa - a seven-tracker driven by his signature percussive style.

Written in his native highlands of Scotland and heavily influenced by the mountainous landscapes, Sarissa seeks to fuse together organic and synthetic sounds in unusual ways. True to his ethos of joining the dots between folk music from cultures around the world, the melodies and rhythms explored throughout are tied together by their timeless, ethereal quality. Interlocking rhythms lead the way as the skeleton in this music with cinematic harmonies woven in and out, leading the listener through dark valleys and emotional peaks.

Each tune tells its own story and has a distinct feel from the next – from the jilting rhythms and hazy rave feel of ‘Sarissa’, the crawling basslines of ‘Gecko’, and the ethereal lightness of ‘Marwa’ to the harmonic weight of Kuro. The seven cuts making up Sarissa are equally effective as dancefloor weapons, or as accompaniments on long foggy walks.

All Vinyl 90s Rap Instrumentals Vol. 1

Last spotted on Eskimo back in the distant days of 2019, London based duo Horixon return with The Beekeeper, a collaboration with Belgian singer and one half of Hydrogen Sea, Birsen. An understated leftfield pop gem, The Beekeeper's skeletal, dub inflected, rhythms, melancholic piano melody and subtly tropical percussion provide the perfect, balmy, backing for Birsen's gentle, lilting vocals. The perfect soundtrack to lying in a hammock and watching the world around you drift by. 

Providing a counterpoint to the more organic, and warm, sounding original Norwegian duo Atella's remix keeps The Beekeeper's slow tempo and dub vibe but brings both their banks of synthesisers and a Nordic touch to the party. Whilst the original whispered of a still, warm summer's day the track's glacial tempo is now matched by icey cool synth arpeggios that glisten and sparkle like frost catching the morning light, whilst Birsen's voice takes on an even more fragile and beautiful timbre.
