Aminata Wassidjé Traoré is a rising voice in Mali. Tamala is her debut album, recorded in Bamako and released in 2009. Born in Diré, near the fabled city of Timbuktu, Aminata was raised within northern Mali’s rich cultural brew. From an ethnic Songhai family, Aminata started singing as a young child. Her music, like the environment that surrounded her growing up, incorporates various cultures and traditions. On Tamala, an album she self-produced with the help of the artist Mamadou Kelly and arranger Baba Simaga, she sings in Songhai and Tamasheq.

While northern Mali still suffers the repercussions of religious and ethnic warfare, Tamala sends a message of reconciliation and inclusion. Aminata believes people can work together for a solution, and sees the vast potential of Mali’s diverse north. Moving to the Southern capital of Bamako not only enabled her to develop as a musician, backing up well known artists like Baba Salah, Khaira Arby and Afel Bocoum, it also enhanced her vision of a diverse and connected Mali.

Tamala is considered a neo-traditional album in the context of the Malian music scene: it is rooted in northern folk musical traditions, but arranged in a contemporary way and mixes drum programming and synthesizers with the banjo-like n'goni and the sokou, a one-string violin. Hints of Hip Hop and electronic dance music sit side by side with the pentatonic sounds of the interior Niger delta.

Afropop Worldwide wrote this about Tamala:
“And then there’s the music—in a word, sublime…solos burst forth with forthright clarity and consistent eloquence. Western sounds and production techniques have been appropriated here, but the melodic phrasing, rhythms and modalities in the music are 100% local.”

In 2013, Aminata began a collaboration with Glitterbeat Records when she appeared on the album Troubles by the Austrailian/American group Dirtmusic. The Guardian (UK) noted in their enthusiastic review of the album that »La Paix, an impassioned cry against the terrorist invasion of Mali, is voiced thrillingly by Aminata Traore.”

Glitterbeat Records is releasing Tamala in a limited vinyl version of 1,000. It will be pressed on 180g vinyl with a gatefold sleeve. The album is coming out in cooperation with Studio Mali, a Bamako based label.

Adiós Morena is the first single off of Afro-Pacific super group, Rio Mira's forthcoming album, Marimba del Pacifico. Composed by Esteban Copete, the single also features remixes by Nicola Cruz, Kaleema & Chancha Via Circuito, Midnight Ravers and M. RUX. 

In 2015, UNESCO added the marimba to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, observing that "Marimba music and traditional chants and dances are musical expressions integral to the family and community fabric of people of African descent in the Colombian South Pacific region and Esmeraldas Province of Ecuador." 

In celebration of this cultural heritage, and with a main goal of creating an intergenerational meeting between the sounds of Afro music from the Pacific, Rio Mira was founded. The project has a fundamental mission of revitalizing and strengthening bonds between the members of the Afro community from each side of the Colombia-Ecuador border. 

Rio Mira is co-produced by Ivis Flies (Co-Director and Creator of the musical and social heritage recovery Project "De Taitas y Mamas", nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2013. "Smile Ambassador" in 2010) and Ivan Benavides (Producer of Carlos Vives, Sidestepper, Chocquibtown, Grammy Winner Gaiteros de San Jacinto) and features a number of well known Cali and Esmeraldeña artists including Esteban Copete and Karla Kanora. Rio Mira's first album, Rio Mira - Marimba del Pacifico, will be released in 2017 on AYA Records.

Lagartijeando's new album "Jallala" is out worldwide on June 7th
Purchase LP / Digital: https://wonderwheelrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/jallallan 2017, Lagartijeando (Mati Zundel), released his second full length album ‘El Gran Poder,’ via Wonderwheel and subsequently hypnotized the masses with the way he laced the traditional Charango playing that he picked up traveling the Andes with the pulsing, digital-cumbia electronica that’d been popularized in the region by the likes of Chancha Via Circuito, Nicola Cruz, and beyond. El Gran Poder plucked Zundel from his small town of Dolores in Argentina and catapulted his sound onto a global stage. He was revered by the likes of The Fader and Bandcamp, who referred to him as an electro-folk alchemist - and that he is. 

On June 7, Lagartijeando casts a new spell with Jallalla, an ambitious new full length being released on Wonderwheel Recordings. Jallalla is a word used in Bolivia to celebrate something- and it’s a word that strengthens in meaning when more people say it together. Jallalla is an entire life in an album - beginning with what would be the sonic representation of pulling back reeds to discover a new path with the song Villazon-Potosi and its sparse electronic percussion gradually filled in with curiosity-giving winds. Following is joyful charango riff that becomes the base for the track La Frontera, which features the sweet, wispy voice of Minük, the Colombian artist Alejandra Ortiz, known as half of the duo Lulacruza.

In 2019 Montoya released his 3rd album ‘Otun’ on ZZK Records. His blend of Afro-Colombian Rhythms and electronic beats (featuring vocalists Pedrina and Quantic collaborator Nidia Gongora) found support from the likes of Branko, Nubya Garcia, Papaoul, and many a dancefloor that came out to see him on tour.

Montoya is a classically trained violinist who moved from Colombia to Italy in 2001 where he joined Fabrica, a “cultural subversion center”, and experimented with arts and music. His fresh take on Colombian sounds pricked up the ears of contemporaries and soon he was asked to remix Nicola Cruz, Matanza and others. 

To borrow some words from DJ Mag, “from Colombia to Treviso via music. Montoya is surely one of the most interesting musicians on the scene”.  Montoya has now invited some of his friends, from Treviso to Colombia, to put their spin on his music. 

Chilean DJ Raff was an architect of the hip-hop scene in Chile and his ‘Latino & Proud’ track was used as the theme tune for Comedy Central’s award winning Broad City.  Since moving to London his electronic productions have gained support from Tom Ravenscroft and Gilles Peterson (BBC 6 Music) and others .  Having recently released music on Dengue Dengue Dengue’s new label, DJ Raff now turns ‘Solo Quiero’ into a sun drenched summer anthem.  

Clap! Clap! has developed his own inimitable style which has seen him gain support from Paul Simon, Gilles Peterson, Future Music Magazine and a raft of others. Montoya recently remixed Clap! Clap!’s ‘Rising Fire’ and now Clap! Clap! dials up the bass and marimba on Montoya’s ‘Pasillo’.

Barcelona based Baiuca has been making a name for himself with his unique vision of traditional folk music from Galicia reshaped with club orientated electronics. His take on ‘Otun’ gives it a deep bouncy and propulsive bass line punctuated with Nidia Gongora’s hypnotic vocals. 

Kenyan field recording and experimental sound artist KMRU, who received recognition from the likes of Resident Advisor for his delicate works, has put his distinct ambient touch on ‘Perla’.  

Lorenzo BITW, Cornelius Doctor, and Delaunay offer up their experimental versions and Joaquin Cornejo revisits ‘Solo Quiero’ with an ethereal blissed out mix.
