Creating this playlist was originally the idea of my dearest friend Michele Ansani, who when I posted my track a few days ago did some research on other existing songs the above topic. So did I. We ended up having only the two of our own songs so this a rather minimized Playlist which we would enjoy to expand. Info about Sai:
Kerstin Saidykhan aka Sai is a music nerd since her teens, influenced by many such as postpunk, dark 
wave through ska, jungle, dnb and techno.
Dancehall and the Jamaican Sound System Culture had also a big influence on her (after visiting 
Jamaica twice at the end of the 90s) especially the ruff and heavy basslines of dub and raggamuffin 
had a big imprint on her.
After the Wall fell, she spend many weekends at Berlin‘s growing club scene.
"Grown up in a small town in Western Germany, Berlin in these days gave me the space to breathe as 
a young adult, what I needed at that time." - Sai
Finally she moved to Berlin in 2001 and came into contact with the rhythm&sound vibe that 
immediately resonated with her.
It was still the time of small and illegal clubs and improvised venues. In that scene, she had the 
opportunity to try herself as a DJ for a certain time. But through some personal trials and tribulations
it never worked out on a larger scale.
Dubtechno became a very special role to her caused by it's introvert meditative attitude.

„It allows me to deal with feelings of isolation and not belonging somewhere which runs through my 
life constantly from childhood on. So music is much more than entertainment to me.“
At the center of it all is the attraction of the dub vibe in general, which she likes to examine in all its 
facets and potentials. She loves creating deep atmospheric mixes around dub techno, combining the 
classics from earlier days with the current releases, often mixed with ambient or other deep and
atmospheric things.

Bosque Redondo

I have been working occasionally for years (at least since 2017) on this track, looking for a sound that could be acceptably evocative and hypnotic. Needless to continue at this point. I am unable to improve it with my skills. 

Heliopolis (Ηλιούπολις) was  an Ancient Egyptian city, the capital of a district of Lower Egypt in Pharaonic times (located north-east of Cairo, nothing remains of it today). It was of great importance in the religious life, due to the deities worshipped there: especially Ra, a solar deity who was later destinated to occupy a central position in various religions, including Roman. It is to this solar cult that the city owes its Greek name.

Heliopolis *

On debut album ‘While I'm Distracted’, London-based New Zealander Arjuna Oakes draws inspiration from contemporary soul and jazz, touches of global folk, electronica, modern classical, and post-rock, with dynamic arrangements and production. ‘While I'm Distracted’ is an album about fighting for your innocence and right to be a vulnerable and honest human. Arjuna’s songwriting explores themes of identity, depression, existentialism, social media, loss of innocence, and finding hope for the future through artistic expression.

“I'm obsessed with albums,” says Arjuna. “I've made seven EPs, but needed time to tackle a full length record. I was using the EPs to learn the craft of how to make a great album, much like a director will make short films before they make a feature. I wanted to take the listener on a journey and spark their imagination. Hopefully the album expresses complex emotions, rather than having an intellectual concept. I'd rather ask questions than answer them”.

Across the album, Arjuna performs vocals, piano, keyboards, synths, production, and wrote the string arrangements. He’s joined by Harrison Scholes on bass, Jo Jenkins and Andre Smith on guitar, Sam Notman on drums, Louisa Williamson on saxophone, Nathan Haines on flute, Kate King on french horn, Leah Thomas on clarinet, Hilary Hayes and Emma Colligan on violin, Chris Van Der Zee on viola, Charley Davenport on cello, Zane Hawkins on percussion, James Macewan on trumpet, and additional production by Callum Mower.

Following the release of his debut EP ‘The Watcher’ in 2019, Arjuna has released various  projects including ‘First Nights’ and ‘Final Days’ (collaborations with longtime friend and co-producer Serebii), released by LA-based record label Innovative Leisure (BADBADNOTGOOD, Allah-Las). ‘First Nights’ debuted at  #5  on KCRW’s top 30 Albums chart with play on BBC 6 Music and BBC 1Xtra. He recently performed for the New Zealand Olympic team in Paris, supported Nathan Haines at The Jazz Cafe, and played sold out shows at 91 Living Room and Servant Jazz Quarters in London.

Ulysses and the Sirens (final draft) *

In 410 A.C. Romans left the rule of Britain. The date and the reasons are still and always a matter of debate among historians; however, in 2010, when it may have been 1600 years since that event and to commemorate it, 500 lighthouses were lit along the route of Hadrian's Wall, from east to west (cover image).
The first draft of the track is not recent (I didn't like it so much) and can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/michele-ansani/departure-from-britannia. I recovered audio material that I had discarded at the time (recording quality not optimal) and added some stuff.

Departure from Britannia (final version) *

In this final version (here the draft: https://soundcloud.com/michele-ansani/sunday-derby) I have the honour of adding the contribution of Manuel Pietra (take a listen to his tracks: https://soundcloud.com/mozartwolfy81), my friend and my daughter's piano teacher, in the first and in the last part of the piece.
For those (like me) born in the late 1950s and raised in Milan in the 1960s, Sunday of derby (AC Milan vs. FC Internazionale) was the most beautiful and most feared day of the year. The three sections of the piece correspond to three easily understood moments: before the match (Saturday night and Sunday morning); during the match (Sunday afternoon); after the match (Sunday evening and Sunday night). All imperfections (as usual) are mine.
As it's clear in the end of the second part of the piece, my team won the match that time (so many years ago ...). I'm sorry to say that Manuel is a fan of the other Milan team, the one that lost the game in the circumstance mentioned ...

Sunday Derby (extended version) **

Reminiscence of Chief Joseph and the Nez Percé war 1877.

The lyrics are in part an excerpt of the original words which Chief Joseph spoke to his followers of the Nez Percé, when they finally surrendered on October 5th, 1877.

Fight No More Forever

The initial melody could be famous, but I don't know who (where and when) composed it. It was the melody of the carillon (in the picture) that some friends gave to my daughter, who was just born. We sung (adding words) and played it for years, even and especially after the music box broke, not to forget it. 
The piece is dedicated to her, who is now 18. The melody of the music box is followed by some (very posed) arias representing the successive stages of her life, childhood and adolescence. The carillon's melody resumes at the end: because I am sure she still hears it, deep down, and that it accompanies her as life goes on.

My daughter's carillon (song for her 18th birthday) *

A few things to say.
1. Sorry, this song is a long one: more than seven minutes, too many to expect to have listeners desirous to get to the end of a small marathon. Moreover, it is slow (the first refrain only comes after three minutes or so) and sung in Italian (the English translation is available, but it is never the same thing).
2. The photo shows two actors: Bekim Fehmiu and Irene Papas, protagonists of a wonderful TV series (‘Odissea’) aired in 1968. A show that enriched my childhood and conditioned my imagination (and my reading) forever.
3. I have long wished to be able to write a song about that story within the story of Ulysses' wanderings: his return to Ithaca and his failure to be recognised by Penelope. I succeeded in 1994, then producing a few versions of it. I recorded this one a few years ago, the sound quality was not excellent but now I have taken it up again, singing it all over again and changing the arrangement a little. I hoped at least to recreate an atmosphere musically suited to the story evoked.

Exit Strategy *

The lyrics translated into Italian are taken from the well-known T.S. Eliot, "The Waste Land". Part IV: "Death by Water".

To give a new and different look to this old track I asked to my (and yours) friends (you know them well: @beatingedge). They improved the mix and above all added an instrumental part, on wich I enjoyed myself with other guitar, pad and cello sounds and parts. Obviously, I thank them immensely, with a special thought for Vampira (aka Mary).

Phlebas il Fenicio [with Beating Edge] *

In Euripides' tragedy 'The Suppliants', a group of Argive mothers travels to Eleusis to plead with Theseus, king of Athens, to help them recover the bodies of their sons, who fell during the failed assault on Thebes. The Thebans, in fact, refuse to return the corpses for burial. These mothers, immersed in profound grief, represent the universal symbol of maternal mourning in the face of the loss of their children in war.

Talking about our lifetime

The long anticipated;) follow up has arrived.  I begin the song with a brief reprise of "Two Faced" to set the stage.  After the cold and bluster of March, the gentleness of spring and early summer is felt with a walk in the park.
Thank you all for the overwhelming response to my ode to March and especially the interest shown in the little teaser, epilogue now a more complete thought.  As they say, "take time to smell the flowers":)

Bosque Redondo (final version)*

This is the first in a series of eight easy, acoustic, rather short and inconclusive tracks, which I’ve assembled by working on new and reworking on some old material adding parts and sounds. 
Will anything actually happen in the end? Unlikely. Definitely not here. Here it’s a montage of bare arpeggios in various keys.
I recorded this some weeks ago: sorry about the guitar sound, the string squeak is a bit too much; now, I hope to have fixed that investing in a better and more expensive set of strings.

In case nothing happens - part 1 (night)*

Hello! I’m a university professor of history who enjoys playing guitar and piano/keyboard, and occasionally composing — unpretentiously, just for fun. I’ve been here for at least 10 years, but only recently have I started using the platform for something other than just external digital storage.
Most of my recordings (made with a KorgD8, Audacity, and more recently Reaper for MIDI and the Spitfire Audio libraries) are entirely homemade and decidedly imperfect. And yet, I think that lately I’ve learned to do something a bit more - and better - also thanks to greater commitment.
My music includes old songs (all written back in the last century; here I’ve only shared the ones I’ve reworked in recent years) as well as both old and new instrumentals — usually in several versions, some of which eventually disappear because they’re simply unlistenable.

Thanks for stopping by and giving something a listen; in the description you’ll often find explanatory notes or translations of the lyrics.
Here I’ve discovered a community of talented musicians and songwriters, and plenty of beautiful music to enjoy. Whenever I like, comment, or repost a track, it’s always the result of attentive listening. For the same reason, I’m not interested in trading empty “likes” without real engagement, and I won’t reply to messages from would-be promoters — follower counts don’t matter to me in the slightest.
