[disquiet0593] The Charm Feat Marc Eisenschink And Encym

I ended up a bit pressed for time for this Junto, but I couldn't not do it; the trios are my absolute favorites.

I woke up at 2am, and because I couldn't get back to sleep, I listened through the #disquiet0592 playlist to hear the duos. I loved what was going on with "7 Hallucinations", and decided that what would complete it would be a temo-synced generative patch from RIpplemaker, which just happened to be tuned a major seventh away from the track's tonal center. 

I loaded the track into AUM's sample player, routed it and the Ripplemaker patch to a mix bus, and then recorded the mix bus. I then tweaked the tempo of the AUM session to clock Ripplemaker at a sort of stumbling rhythm against the original, and let the patch run, fading it up and down as needed, adding a "electrical systems failing, flickering overhead lights" feel on top of the already very spacy track.

File was transferred to iCloud with AudioShare, and then downloaded to my Mac to allow me to add the metadata with Fission. The actual recording, mixing, and everything else all happened on the iPad, lying in bed. That is probably my personal record for being laid back while working on music.

This week I chose to work on @Campos-1(https://soundcloud.com/campos-1/a-loneliest-numberdisquiet0591), @halF-unusuaL  (https://soundcloud.com/half-unusual/half-loneliest-disquiet0591-collaboration-with-campos) and @NoodleTwister (https://soundcloud.com/noodletwister/half-feedback-disquiet0593-with-campos-and-half-unusual) track. 
Thanks a lot for sharing their works.

Initially I was thinking about processing it with modular, but when I imported the tracks I started working in Ableton and forgot my initial plans. Everything was already there so I just worked on textures and levels. @Campos laid the drums, @halF unusuaL became a watery/glitchy ambient and @Noodle Twister the crunch.

@halF unusuaL track was panned and split in order to use right channel only. I imported it in Ableton and duplicated the track. The two tracks have different warp settings (Textures and Tones), Auto Filter with bandpass, pitch hack (12 & 24 semitones up), phaser and Valhalla Shimmer. Tracks panned extreme L and R
@Noodle Twister audio effect rack with 2 lines, one heavily processed with GrainSpace, a m4L Formant and  GongAmp. The other is effected just with Formant. The rack is then processed with Color Limiter and Slink Pan
@Campos is effected with Drum Buss, Saturator, Glue Compressor, Auto Filter high pass and Beat Repeat, panned 20L 20R

Step 1: Choose a static sound, such as a field recording of a specific place, or a held tone, or a recording of noise.

Step 2: Experiment with animating the static sound selected from Step 1 by slowly, subtly, manually modulating it, using only filter frequency and resonance.

Step 3: Record a track resulting from the techniques you developed in Step 2.

For this track, I used a single chord run through a QPAS filter, which was pinged by gates coming from an Eas, generated by a number of shifting envelopes.

The Assignment: Make music by processing a static sound.

I used a field recording of static rain in Munich from 2021 or so, on four tracks identically. All of them got filtered thru Cardinal VST, a very nice VCV Rack alternative, working as an effect, so that I could apply nested LFOs and parameter curves to the stereo filters (1x lowpass, 1x highpass, 2x bandpass) and it's resonances. The whole mix was filtered by apesoft apefilter for dramaturgy reasons.

There was a 1 hour version but I cut it down to 10 minutes because even I could not stand it that long, but with 10 minutes it's nice. Without the junto rule set I think I would have applied more elements.

This project is the second of three that are being done in collaboration with the 2023 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 6 through 10. The topic this year is « √ » — as the organization explains: “the radical, or square root symbol and the power of its symbolism are central to the festival and these will be translated into music in multifarious ways.” All three projects will engage with the work of Éliane Radigue, who is the Composer-in-Residence for the 2023 festival.
