Recently I found the work of a fantastic trumpet player and composer here on SoundCloud: Vivek Patel https://soundcloud.com/vivek-patel. It was always my wish to have a truly great trumpet player on one of my flamencoated tracks, for one because trumpet is one of my favorite instruments in it's sound, dynamic range and voice-like expression. Secondly, Jazz is one of the musical styles I love, in which I always was most exited about the trumpet solos. 

To increase the excitement I also asked my SC buddy, the great fretless bassplayer Mirko Borach https://soundcloud.com/stringburner to join in the fun, who always brings such a thrilling drive to the music and such rich tone.

This one is as I call it a flamencoated track which blends several styles. From flamenco to Jazz, some Middle Eastern motives and a touch of orchestral strings background. This one is a tribute to Michael Brecker's great Two Blocks from the Edge, which I've always loved for it's dark atmosphere. The ones familiar with Brecker's work and catalogue will recognize some of the themes in this one.

I am happy to present this unusual track with an eerie atmosphere and crossover quality: Close to the Edge.

This opera written by George Friederich Handel, with a libretto by Pietro Pariati, first premiered here in Covent Garden in 1737.  And this is actually the first staging on the original site, and also, the first professional staging in the UK.  

I’m Alice Gilmour and in this audio introduction, I’ll give you the synopsis and a detailed description of how it all looks.  There will also be one audio described performance which is on Wednesday 15 October at 6.45pm, where you can hear this information again through the headsets ten minutes before the show. Then during the actual performance, I will also include some translations as it is sung in Italian, as well as tell you what’s happening visually.  There will be a touch tour before the show at 5.45pm where we can walk around the set and feel the costumes and props up close, so to book your place, please call the box office on 020 7304 4000, or you can email boxoffice@roh.org.uk.

Hailed as a “tremendous pianist” by Downbeat Magazine, Michel Reis has in recent years paved his way into an artist of international acclaim. Michel Reis has appeared in in many of the world’s most famous venues and festivals, including the Blue Note Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Olympia in Paris, the Casa de Musica in Porto, the Panama Jazz Festival the Montreux Jazz Festival, Cully Jazz, Crest Jazz Vocal, OctLoft Jazz Festival, Les Rendez-Vous de l’Erdre de Nantes and many more. He has toured extensively all over the world, performing in Europe, Asia, North and South America, as well as Africa.

Michel Reis has released 10 albums as a leader and co-leader: A Young Mind (2005) and Fairytale (2009), Point of No Return (2011), “Reis Demuth Wiltgen”(2013), ‘’Hidden Meaning’’ (2013), “Capturing This Moment” (2015) and ‘’Places In Between” (2016), ‘’Mito” (2018) ,  ‘’Japan Quartet‘’(2018) and ‘’Once In A Blue Moon‘’(2018)

A native of Luxembourg, Michel Reis began studying classical piano, jazz piano, composition and theory at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg under the tutelage of Gast Waltzing, Serge Bausch, Kris Defoort, Patrick Hartert and Guy Cabay. To further his musical training, Reis moved to Boston, MA to study at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music, studying piano and composition with Danilo Perez, Ran Blake, Frank Carlberg, Hal Crook, Joe Lovano, and Dave Holland, obtaining first a Bachelor of Music and then a Master of Music. After his studies, Michel Reis moved to New York to delve into the professional Jazz scene, performing regularly with different groups as a leader and as a sideman. It is in New York, where Michel Reis met composer and orchestrator David Spear, who has been very influential in his career and whom he remained a student and a close friend with.

Michel Reis has collaborated with Joshua Redman, Vince Mendoza Didier Lookwood, Richard Bona, Gast Waltzing, Patrick Zimmerli, Jeff Ballard, Joshua Redman, Esperanza Spalding, George Garzone, Paul Wiltgen, Marc Demuth, Adam Cruz, Jonas Burgwinkel, Robert Landfermann, Stefan Karl Schmid, Niels Klein, Louis Moutin, Mauro Gargano, Jonathan Orland, Takashi Sugawa, Akihiro Nishiguchi, Sun Ishiwaka and many more. Besides performing, Michel Reis works extensively as a composer, arranger and orchestrator. 

His co-lead trio Reis Demuth Wiltgen collaborates on a regular basis with US saxophonist Joshua Redman, who performs several of the trio’s compositions with his own bands, including Reis’ ‘The Story Of You And Me’. They embarked on a European tour in March 2018, where one of the highlights was a concert together with the Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Vince Mendoza.
