Mark Haanstra and me recorded 'Tonio', a recent composition by a composer and musician we truly admire, and who is a great inspiration to us: Theo Loevendie.
It is played on viola and bass guitar (with a loop pedal in the middle section). In the middle section I also added two more viola layers. Thanks for your inspiring tune Theo!

The first METHXX release of the year comes from Andy Skopes with his exquisite ‘Speechless EP’. We’re taken on a journey through Andy’s musical brain, with diversions into the rugged breaks of ‘Séance’ and the aural paradise that is ‘Heroin Wash’, which are just two of four perfectly crafted pieces of drum and bass on offer. The atmosphere and energy across the EP is weighted perfectly, whilst every track almost sounds effortless in the way it’s been put together, something that Andy has mastered and can now proudly show off.

Andy Skopes - Let Go

“Seeds of Paradise” was written for the Dutch based Electra ensemble. It is a set of fragments, stitched together into a single movement. The binding factor is the text, a collection of Japanese haiku, all written by Japanese poets shortly before their death. While the poetry is not always literally “about” death, it lingers as a theme in the background, hovering as a silent partner. Also essential to the character of the piece is the fact that the performers are asked to play as soft as possible, but then also amplified, creating as it were, a sound and then putting it under an audio-microscope. As haiku poetry creates a world from just a few words, so in “Seeds of Paradise” is a small sound opened up to the listener.

Seeds of paradise rf

Ron Ford wrote Kristal (Dutch for crystal) at the request of the conductor Jurjen Hempel for the Netherlands Youth Orchestra. Two oboes and clarinets slowly unfold a long melody, centering and expanding around a single g, while the rest of the orchestra gives an ever changing reflection of this melodic material. These reflections resemble the light cast from a turning crystal, hanging before a sunlit window. Slowly this web of reflection grows throughout the piece until, at the end, the true crystal appears. Only at this point does the crystal stop turning and stands still.
