Firstly; DJ Helmy’s sound is of rhythm. No, not that doof doof stuff getting around these days by “button pushing” DJs. We’re talking drums, drums on vinyl. Think Reggae, Hip Hop, Funk, Drum & Bass, Glitch, Dubstep, Dancehall.. SOUL! 

Emerging from earlier years spent as a drummer for rock bands and a hand percussion tutor, DJ Helmy’s style of seamlessly mixing (and yes, in key) rhythmic styles of known and unknown tracks from around the globe over the past 50 years, coupled with the tight and colourful arrays of scratching thrown in for great measure assuring crowds that skilled vinyl DJs are still alive and kicking.

DJ Helmy is known to most as Triple J favourite; Illy’s tour DJ, co-founder of Beats Working (Obese Records), as well as DJ for iconic Melbourne names in the scene including Lotek, Elf Tranzporter, Ishu, MoneyKat, Syntax, Jamima Jones plus many more. Prior to Helmy’s residency at The Sunshine Coast’s premier live music venues; Solbar and The Piano Bar, this turntablist played shows including headlining Obese Records’ 10 year Anniversary Block Party, Groovin’ The Moo Festival, Coaster Festival, Open Arms Festival, Global Festival as well as 2 national tours and sharing stages with internationals including Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, Afrika Bambaataa and Pharoahe Monch plus national heavyweights like Mantra, The Herd, Drapht, Dialectrix, Spit Syndicate plus most Oz Hip Hop move-makers. Triple J has featured a mix of Helmy’s on their “Mix Up” show and the rhythm junkie also took out first place in the NSW North Coast DJ competition some years ago.

Both singles ‘Jungle’ and ‘Notion’ were quick to receive high rotation on Australian broadcaster triple j with ‘Jungle’ been added as mega hit of the week on Netherlands 3FM radio and is picking up rotation on stations across North America. Accolades include a #8 ARIA album chart, topping the iTunes chart with her “Notion EP”, ‘Jungle’ coming in at #3 on triple j’s hottest 100, an APRA Award nomination, winning a J award for “Unearthed Artist of the Year 2016” and over 25 million streams Worldwide.
