But the fact that he’s worked with everyone from Biggie to Jay-Z to Nas to KRS-One makes his discography pretty much incomparable. And we’re not talking about obscure cuts that lost their appeal years ago. These are timeless songs! So for today’s edition of The 10s, we present Primo Treats: 10 Classic Non-Gangstarr Primo Joints. We’ll probably have to do a part two and three to this because dude has worked with everyone we love and always comes correct. All praises due to DJ Premier, thank you for all the music you’ve given us. It’s our pleasure to celebrate the work you’ve put in. I guess right now we should start the show.

The 10s | Primo Treats: 10 Classic Non-Gang Starr DJ Premier Productions

When @evboogie from @upnorthtrips proposed the idea for a mix celebrating the 20th anniversary of Ironman, we couldn't resist, considering that Ghostface might be our favorite rapper ever. 

Since Ironman was the last of six Wu-Tang albums produced entirely by Rza, we widened the scope of the mix in order to pay homage to his legendary run in that classic Wu-Tang era.

»When the east is in the house, oh my god, danger!« Was 1995 als Schlachtruf aus jedem Jeep-Lautsprecher dröhnte, war die Hook des legendären Tracks »Danger« vom New Yorker Rap-Duo Blahzay Blahzay, bestehend aus MC Outloud und DJ P.F. Cuttin. Letzterer sollte auch nach Auflösung der Gruppe mit seinen Mixtapes die zweite Hälfte jenes mythischen Jahrzehnts von Wanderstiefeln und Daunenjacken, von Tarnuniformen und Baggy Jeans prägen. Die Dekade, in der HipHop seinen Siegeszug durch deutsche Jugendzimmer und Partykeller fortsetzte, der bereits Mitte der achtziger Jahre begonnen hatte. Eine Zeit, in der die allermeisten Augen strikt nach New York gerichtet waren, in die Geburtsstadt der Subkultur, wo mystische Helden wie The Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Gang Starr und der Wu-Tang Clan einen kantigen Soundtrack für den alltäglichen Kampf durch den Großstadtdschungel entwarfen: »Boom« machte die Bassdrum, »Bap« antwortete die Snare.

Fast Forward ins Jahr 2012, und genau diese Ästhetik ist heute gefragter denn je: Dank Referenzen bei jungen, relevanten Rap-Künstlern wie Mac Miller und Joey Bada$$, die sich wieder auf die »Goldene Ära« beziehen und die überbordende Kreativität dieser Zeit an die Stelle der kommerziellen Stangenware des aktuellen Mainstreams setzen. We asked Stereo:Type about the process of making this mix, and here is what he had to say:

"When you're commissioned to make a mix for DJ Shadow, you know you have to pull something special out of the bag. Making sure it was a musical experience was as much a key part of this as making it a hype mix to listen to, considering you are working with material by a guy whose process involves finding sounds which work together as though they were made for one another. When i was approached to do this, I was asked to make the mix using material either sampled by, or remixed for or by Shadow. So Instead of making it a straight up one track into another kind of mix, I tried to approach it like a live performance, deconstructing tracks into their component parts then re-assembling and combining them with my own take on it. I certainly hope people have as much of a blast listening to it as i did making it."

Stereo:Type's DJ Shadow Re-Mixtape

25 Years ago today Raekwon dropped his game-changing 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx'.  I've had this date circled on my project calendar since January.....If I only recorded 2 tributes out of all the classics released in 1995, OB4CL & Mobb Deep's 'The Infamous' were the absolute Must-Do's.  Those masterpieces were like artistic cousins and quickly became the soundtrack to that summer.  To say this album was important is a HUGE understatement.  It was monumental, and arguably the apex of the Wu solo catalog.
This LP cemented Rae & Ghost as a dynamic duo as they formed their own clique-within-the-clique, effortlessly passing each other the baton over RZA's cinematic production.   Weaving intricate stories of street tales mixed with 5%-er knowledge, this project played out like a feature film.  Vividly spit in their coded slanguage, you felt like you were right there next to them on the island of Staten.  I tried to maintain the original feel of the LP, while adding some original samples + blends to switch things up a bit.
Since the album is more pka The Purple Tape, I'm dropping this tribute cassette-style with 2 separate sides.
