On her fifth solo album, Mirah breaks it down and builds it back up again with the street smarts that only years behind the wheel of love can inspire.  Ready with the maps and driven to the rhythms on the radio dial, Changing Light’s ten songs carry us from heartbreak to wholeness and all the places in between.

Uprooted from her home after a scorching break-up, Mirah spent four years rambling and recording.  Tracks were laid down in almost two dozen houses and apartments — from the Northwest to Southern California to the East Coast. Sparse demos were recorded with co-producer Christopher Doulgeris in Portland and Los Angeles.  Embellishments were then added by a slew of friends and collaborators, including Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Mary Timony, Emily Wells, and Heather McEntire (Mount Moriah).  In Philadelphia, Mirah and her sister Emily Zeitlyn (Divers) penned “LC,” an homage to childhood inspiration Leonard Cohen.  Seattle-based composer Jherek Bischoff drew up intricate string arrangements which were recorded in the living rooms of each individual player.  And Tune-Yards producer Eli Crews co-produced several tracks with Mirah in her new hometown of Brooklyn, New York.

Changing Light’s reassuring compass is found in Mirah’s shimmering vocals and incisive descriptions.  There is yearning (“Gold Rush” and “Fleetfoot Ghost”) and hot anger (“Goat Shepherd”), but no shortage of lyrical and musical playfulness. Whether it be the T. Rex-inspired rough edges of “Radiomind,” the rollicking lo-fi bang-and-pop of “Goat Shepherd,” or the lush pop balladry of “Turned the Heat Off,” the album corrals string sections and vintage synths with horns, a multitude of guitar tones and overdriven drums.  With calm and clamor, Mirah brings us all closer together through her universal honesty and occasional use of the vocoder.

“It’s a break-up record.  It has some moments of darkness, some twists and turns, but ultimately, there’s a resolution,” says Mirah.  "So much can happen in four years, even forgiveness.”

While Mirah has been making independent pop records for well over a decade, Changing Light is the debut release on her new imprint, Absolute Magnitude Recordings.

I dreamed about a disco version of this song. Took me a while, but I think I got there. A man and a woman meet in a bar on a sleazy night life street. They both have drinking and drug problems and don't particularly care what happens to them. The man offers to take the woman to "the hills" - somewhere private. The encounter leaves them feeling a sense of failure which they didn't expect. She leaves the car, slams the door and walks away. The man feels a great opportunity slipping away. He looks for her down an old dirt track and then sees her "angel" eyes shining back at him.

Mid Ayr, the moniker of Brisbane-based singer/songwriter Hugh Middleton, has been a long time in the making. Hugh started writing demos for his new project whilst playing and touring the world with his previous band, The Trouble With Templeton. “I have always had the desire to start my own project so gradually whilst on the road with Templeton I started writing and then I would record the ideas in my bedroom studio. I began playing with drummer Zach Moynihan after an off hand meeting at the Zoo in Brisbane supporting his girlfriend at the time. After a brief chat about influences I knew we were on the same page with our musical aspirations and decided to set up some rehearsals. Zach was also playing drums in Brisbane’s ‘My Own Pet Radio’ and ‘Denpasaar’ and had the idea of asking Alex L’Estrange, who was also playing in both these outfits, to jump in for a rehearsal. We hit it off immediately…”

As well as being an incredibly gifted songwriter and instrumentalist, L’Estrange has quite the knack for production, (and was in fact at the time producing the upcoming side project from Sam Cromack, “My Own Pet Radio”). Alex became more and more involved with the production of the Mid Ayr EP in the months to come.

Hugh popped his first single ‘My Mayhem’, recorded at home by himself, up online earlier this year with no fan fair whatsoever and it was picked up by influential music blogger “Mr Suicide Sheep”, receiving 400,000 listens in a few weeks, now clocking in at over 650,000 views and plays across video and streaming platforms, and received a swathe of incredible reviews, such as…
