Astronauts 'In My Direction' - single released 19/1/15. 

One of the highlights from the debut Astronauts album ‘Hollow Ponds’, ‘In My Direction’ is a gorgeous, cascading slice of dark, folky pop, with Dan’s breathy vocal harmonies - and call-and-responses with his friend and collaborator Michael Cranny – floating reassuringly over an intertwining acoustic guitar flow and taut percussive backbone. As with all the best Astronauts material, it’s hooky, emotionally involving, and mildly unsettling, all at once. 

The brilliant video for the song was conceived and made by Armenia-based production company Manana Films, after they approached Dan about collaboration earlier this year. The result is an idiosyncratic, unforgettable video starring Armenian actor Andranik Lavchyan rhythmically wending his way around the capital Yerevan, confusing everyone he encounters. 

‘In My Direction’ is backed with a remix of the ‘Hollow Ponds’ track ‘Everything’s A System, Everything’s A Sign’ from Kieran Mahon, a minimal/ambient composer and long-time friend of Dan’s, who creeps up silently behind the original and injects it with a swirling, insistent menace.

Mid Ayr, the moniker of Brisbane-based singer/songwriter Hugh Middleton, has been a long time in the making. Hugh started writing demos for his new project whilst playing and touring the world with his previous band, The Trouble With Templeton. “I have always had the desire to start my own project so gradually whilst on the road with Templeton I started writing and then I would record the ideas in my bedroom studio. I began playing with drummer Zach Moynihan after an off hand meeting at the Zoo in Brisbane supporting his girlfriend at the time. After a brief chat about influences I knew we were on the same page with our musical aspirations and decided to set up some rehearsals. Zach was also playing drums in Brisbane’s ‘My Own Pet Radio’ and ‘Denpasaar’ and had the idea of asking Alex L’Estrange, who was also playing in both these outfits, to jump in for a rehearsal. We hit it off immediately…”

As well as being an incredibly gifted songwriter and instrumentalist, L’Estrange has quite the knack for production, (and was in fact at the time producing the upcoming side project from Sam Cromack, “My Own Pet Radio”). Alex became more and more involved with the production of the Mid Ayr EP in the months to come.

Hugh popped his first single ‘My Mayhem’, recorded at home by himself, up online earlier this year with no fan fair whatsoever and it was picked up by influential music blogger “Mr Suicide Sheep”, receiving 400,000 listens in a few weeks, now clocking in at over 650,000 views and plays across video and streaming platforms, and received a swathe of incredible reviews, such as…
