The first appearance of Mike Jungerius aka Human Space Machine on the Swiss label re:st is an exciting one. As a core-member of the Dutch De Lichting collective where he released most of his well received works before, he now steps out of the beaten path and explores different vibes and tempo's for a first international affair on re:st.
Written and produced during the multiple lockdown months back in 2021, HSM created the Zone EP. It's an adventurous four track project balancing somewhere in the grey space between experimental drum & bass and half paced sluggy rhythms. Bringing high energy with tight drum patterns and razor sharp beats while it leaves enough space to zone out in its deep atmospheres and subaquatic grooves.

We imagine this VA as a continuous story, exploring different styles from drum and bass to techno, with a care on sound design and psychedelia.

Last track from Milan based Atoloi “Verde Serpente” focuses on fast synth arpeggios and shifted percussions giving the listener a real psychedelic experience.

Very few electronic music artists can boast of spanning a wide musical spectrum as the UK producer Calum Lee aka Paleman / Fresnel Lens.Always emphasizing the percussive side (advantage of being a jazz drummer), and always with an innovative spirit, the releases of this authentic sound designer oscillate between the most abstract / experimental electronica and minimalist club focused techno, from atmospheric and introspective works to the sickest dubstep / bass music.

As at 30D we declare ourselves absolute fans of Calum’s music, we had a clear obligation to ask him to join our catalogue, specifically for the EyesHave It sub-label (we had especial interest in his interpretation of broken, dark and industrial techno). His answer was direct and unmistakable:”I’ve sent you a lot of pieces that fit with your label vision and the imagery that we love.. I’ve been studying existentialism a lot recently, so these tunes are a reflection of my headspace at the moment!”. A true declaration of intent!

And here it is, five perfect examples of obsessive tribal madness, overexciting synthetic broken beats and a lot of rawness. A pure musical gem.

Dyl has been a personal favorite of many of us here at Delayed for some time now. His albums, from 2015’s Elements LP, are rich, dense, green, dubby and warm drum and bass that you just want to cuddle up with.  Forthcoming on the consistently excellent re:st label, Nothing As It Seems sees Dyl moving across varying tempos and genre to produce music that feels free to explore mood as a central consideration.

Premiering here, Maybe Not is a deceptively simple piece of drum and bass. Twisted organs soar over a laid-back minimal roller of a rhythm with skittering drum fills and breaks.  A massive, ominous rumbling bassline really kicks things into gear, with the evolving harmonic interplay between the bass and organs provoking something akin to that rave euphoria that makes drum and bass so pleasurable for me.  It is propulsive music that can alter and arrest, for a while, our experience of time. The energy tapers off marginally towards the back of the tune, but who cares?  If I heard this tune drop when I was out somewhere, I’d lose my absolute shit.

Pointillist club rhythms and dense, porous dub clouds encircle the Wrecked Lightship as Laurie Osborne and Adam Winchester set sail for phantom islands once more. The nocturnal boatswains chart a course guided by pronounced percussive impulses, using physicality to navigate the looming atmospheric pressure that has become their signature style.

Opening tracks ‘Arial’ and ‘Third Law’ speak to the roots of Osborne and Winchester’s respective work as Appleblim and Wedge, dealing in dancefloor abstractions where techno, electro and dubstep once stood, but there’s much more at play than simple genre tags could ever express. ‘Third Law’s electro-static interference calls back to Winchester’s work in Dot Product, while the twitchy urgency and gnarly bass echoes Osborne’s ALSO project with Second Storey.

Wrecked Lightship is an anchorless concern, free to drift into experimental waters if the currents surge that way, and so ‘Kill Mirror’ and ‘Hydrotower’ head away from forthright structures to play around with sound design and full-frequency manipulation. It’s too kinetic and jagged to be considered ambient, even if it willfully shirks the dancefloor. But for every starboard swerve there’s a prevailing wind, and the likes of finely-tuned club weapon ‘Take It Back’ whip ahead with laser-eyed focus.

Nailing their split interests between immediacy and the avant-garde to the mast, Wrecked Lightship deepen the reach of their project on their second album. Whatever shape a specific track might take, Oceans & Seas serves as a paean to the art of sonic manipulation and spatial processing.
