Last spotted on Pets with his ‘Collapsed’ EP just over a year ago, London’s Joseph Ashworth continues to furrow his own unique, deep, soul-laden path. Having treated Needwant, Anjunadeep and Made Of Concrete to his touching, molten dynamics since his previous Pets outing, he has returned to Catz N Dogz' label HQ with another selection of soul-stirring late night grooves.
‘Sienna’ stirs more than just the soul; a classically-trained house cut, it will move you physically and emotionally as it oozes feeling with every chord flurry and delicate layer of instrumentation, rising and rising with a poignant uplift. Think AME, think Chandler, think Schwarz… Think truly timeless emotional dancefloor music. 
‘Vitamins’ is equally alluring and smouldering as it takes an unhurried slow-burn build, easing in a raw, grainy and ultimately feel good piano hook that’s London, Berlin and New York in precision measures. Filtered, chugging, unrelenting; once again it’s a powerful hit of feel-good with all the hallmarks of longevity. 
Pets invited fellow countryman Earth Trax to remix ‘Sienna’. Considering sienna is an earth pigment, it’s a clever connection before you even get to his tripped out deconstruction, where horns are melted into wavy textures and the organs sound like keys from outer space. Finally Joseph ties it all together with a more restrained twist on ‘Vitamins’ where the piano hook steps back to allow the subtle, hip-slinking percussive elements to take the lead. 
Four tracks, each one tailored for a different chapter of the night, but all precision timed for the warmer months ahead… Singular, soulful and genuinely special. Joseph and Pets have done it again.

Just in time for summer, Pampa issued Aimlessness, the long-awaited new album from Dntel AKA Los Angeles producer Jimmy Tamborello. His latest electronic suite brought forth stronger leanings toward house grooves, building upon the pop and IDM approaches he explored earlier in his career as half of the Postal Service and a member of Figurine – with a healthy dose of Pampa otherworldliness on top. 

Now, Robag Wruhme steps in and recontextualizes two Aimlessness cuts for a remix EP. Wruhme is already a beloved member of DJ Koze’s extended family, having released the full-length Thora Vukk about one year ago, which was deemed “another success for both him and Pampa” in Resident Advisor’s four-star review.

First up is Robag’s “Kloff Mottüré” mix of “Bright Night”, a starry-eyed transformation of Dntel’s work that twinkles like fireflies in the clear midnight sky. With symphonic splashes, playful pitter-patters and a tranquil breakdown, it sounds a bit like teenage toads skinny-dipping amongst the lilypads.

Next up, Robag finds inspiration in Dntel’s “Jitters”, not once but twice:  The “Marf Labo” mix takes the title quite literally, offering a jittery breakbeat interpretation with a metallic angel chorus swirling over the haphazard beats. Finally, on the flip side, the “Emmens Worsch” mix brings things more closely aligned with the grooving, heartfelt house thump that Pampa has engendered. It’s the EP’s most DJ-friendly cut, while at the same time showing off Robag’s gentle production touches and letting Tamborello’s sweet, subdued voice shine through.

Alex Barck releases ‘Re-set’, the first in a series of 12” vinyl only singles leading to his debut solo album ‘Reunion’. As well as heralding Barck’s first solo work, it also features the future album’s first featured guest in Bristol vocalist Pete Josef.

Three more 12" singles will be released throughout the year before ‘Reunion’ drops later in 2013.

Barck and family left Germany last summer for a new home on the idyllic La Reunion Indian Ocean island, which gifts the album its ambiguous title as well as a theme of new beginnings and fusion. It is here where he has been progressively guiding ‘Reunion’ through to completion for the past year.

Alex Barck is a founding member of the renowned DJ and producer collective Jazzanova, one half of the Prommer & Barck project and A&R manager for record label Sonar Kollektiv.

Why Autonomous Africa?

Many of the problems Africa faces are a result of outside interference by other countries, and as the 21st century progresses we will see the continued pillage of African resources to feed the global capitalist machine on an unprecedented scale. Corrupt and greedy regimes gladly sell their land and mineral wealth to finance their own extravagant lifestyles while the vast majority of ordinary people see little or no improvement in their own lives. An autonomous Africa run by the people for the people, where African land is predominantly used to feed African people and Africa's vast wealth of resources is used to benefit the people of Africa seems the only logical way forward. Autonomous Africa's goal is to highlight this message and here presents to you 4 tracks of African inspired grooves.

We fully realise a small run, independently released 12" is going to make very little difference to the world, but doing something has to be better than doing nothing. The idea of an autonomous Africa may be naive and unrealistic, but at some point the world we live in will have to change or future generations are going to be left with very little as we consume way more than our fair share. We have collectively buried our heads in the sand thinking we are powerless to engender change. Individually we have little power but collectively, the power is ours.

About The Mtandika Mission

Mtandika is a large village in the dry Ruaha river valley, 400km west of Dar es Salaam. It is a very poor village.

One of the prime movers in the village is Sister Barberina Mhagala. Since she retired from being Headmistress of the Primary School in 2005, Sister Barberina has been developing a Trade School at Mtandika to provide skills training for girls who are either orphans or have no fees for secondary education. She started by building a classroom and dormitory for the Trade School girls who were given sewing lessons and learning to make garments to sell.

Because many of the children do not have homes locally, accommodation is critical. So Sister then built extra accommodation blocks, not only for some of the girls attending the Trade School but also for some 80 girls attending the local Lukosi Secondary School where there was no accommodation.

The girls are taught to be as self sufficient as possible and as well and grow their own food and rear animals in the school grounds.

Water supply is critical, as water is not only required for every day purposes at the school but for irrigating the shambas [allotments]. Water is currently pumped from the nearby perennial Lukosi river some 500 metres away using a petrol pump. Investigations into a cheaper alternative are being investigated.

Education is essential if Tanzania is to fully develop its full potential and anything is possible given the opportunity. As well as supporting Sister Barberina in her capital expenditure, some 10 of the children at the Trade School and 30 at local Secondary Schools who cannot afford the fees are sponsored by funds raised by the charity.
