It’s that time again for a new mix, and for Fair Shake 012 we are so incredibly thrilled to welcome Sydney icon Kate Doherty. When we first listened back to this we were moved by the story this mix tells of hope and acceptance, sometimes beguiled by a false future, but often renewed through music and a sense of pride in Australia’s dance tapestry. It seems overwhelmingly fitting that those featured in this mix all come from Australian origins, as we experience the world alongside each other. As spring blooms, sit on the balcony, have a glass of wine in the sun and let Kate turn you into a believer that things are getting better. 

Face the unknown, a spiralling relinquish of power,
Acceptance of our miserly delegation in confinement. 
On our hands patiently, slowly cursing luck, 
we stand out the window and look upon the unflinching earth. 
Here it seems we stay, months weeks and cold hours drag us. 
But there is hope yet in our time, 
A glimmer of forthcoming encroaches, raises the spirit, 
raises a glass and toasts in a renewal of sunshine and bravery. 
Openings appear in the brooding air, prick and you shall pass.

Turn up that radio! VSA Radio is back with a new chapter, this time featuring another local rising star: For episode 18 we have Téa (she/her) curating 1,5 hour of extra groovy and trippy old school house. Say hello to Téa:

"I haven’t been playing music for very long, and I’m still learning how to curate a mixtape as I don’t think it’s the easiest thing to do. But I had a lot of fun making this, and it’s made out of all my fave tracks at the moment! 

This mix is a spacey trip through different styles of groovy house-music and features an interview with an alien and a black boa.

A saviour selector, she sways us with a sermon, lifts us up, beats our celestial heart. In a distant time, the earth revolves as it always did. In this age, bionics curate the masses, searching for stimulation is the motive of the heathens. In the recesses of Melbourne, everything has merged, synchronised and blended together. Hybrid is everything, technology, people, cultures and genres weld. Boroughs exist over and underground, scraping the sky as they drill deeper into the red rock. It is here, under the earth and towards the molten centre, that the psychedelic techno core of BDE’s Fair Shake mix spurns. Crowds form, jettison in from caverns, and writhe to the soundtrack of the times - join them.

We are stoked to welcome The Remedy Man to Fair Shake 15th edition for his true blue selection sizzle. This mix shares with us his slice of Straya, and takes us on a cruise through our blazoned bushland. One for the road, roll on by the big beat with a route running from the gong to the mountain, beach to fern, sand to snow. Come one come all for a trip down Remedy lane.

Fair Shake 015 - The Remedy Man

Gday! And welcome to the Fair Shake Express. 3rd Orbit and Softserve in the booth. Now, find space, alight the station, relinquish the body and let them pitch us through arcs of golden chaos.  

Conducting aural scores, they encourage movement instantly, we willing passengers impress without demur. It trains down errant tracks, bouncing along the sleepers, flashing glorious sounds and poking holes in rugged terrain. Powered by steam, it exhales, and shutters the limbs all four corners. 

3rd Orbit & Softserve host The Bleached Re-Cap on Area3000 Radio focusing on driving sounds from Naarm & surrounds, so we were super excited for them to join us and highlight artists and labels solely from the city they reside. "Strange Moments" suggests those moments of contemplation are strange, perhaps of questioning or searching for answers. The man's loneliness and apparent lack of sense of existence. It's as if in those moments, time stops and only the silence of the universe and the internal search exist.

Currently Melbourne based, Val York relocated from Sydney a month before the first lockdown and we are stoked to share her captivating Fair Shake mix. Val is a BAG resident and co-founder of ēteru podcast and It seems fitting for this to arrive soon after confirmation of Melbourne’s lockdown extending. Her mix is a spectre of sound, a lateral incision of electronic music from this southern land, musing on the state in which we at present reside. 

We are forbidden by law to meet and dance. We are confined; dictated to stay in one known place as a uniform deed. As you roll on in this motion, confront yourself to stop to listen. Close your eyes, consider your current state of being, your existence as you pose it to yourself. A familiar space cannot be unfamiliar. To know is to numb, we must accept to distract.

Rainbow Serpent dedication mix! As one of the most magical doofs of the year is forced into an unfortunate consecutive hiatus; we felt it was only right to pay homage to this Australian institution by inviting a local psyhead into the series. We are absolutely ecstatic to welcome host of tuna fat podcast and higher recordings honcho Skwid for our 10th Fair Shake mix. 
 
On what would have been a special Mad Monday, Skwid showcases the higher recordings suite and helps us fantasise about being back barefoot in the dust.

Psytrance is an often overlooked subculture of dance music, however it is undoubtedly a significant aspect of Australian electronic music culture. If you haven’t helped yourself to a melt at the Main Stage under the Tesla Coil then it’s something that needs to be on that bucket list!
