This song started as a remix but I loved the instrumental so much I wanted to keep it. We tried singer after singer but nothing clicked. One day Nevve sent over some ideas, and with her voice, it instantly made sense.  To me, the dynamic across the lows and highs in this track reflect the complexities of love, the tribulations of lust, and everything that falls in between.  The turn of the new year has me feeling good, and like now is the right time to put this out in to the world.

Retrovision

Flamingods unveil brand new disco krautrock banger ‘Paradise Drive’, an elongated funk rager instantly hitting in with an infectious groove that is deftly punctuated by cowbells and shimmering synthesized arpeggios. 

The track, influenced by the international disco and funk sounds the band grew up with, features a guest spot by Mikey of Snapped Ankles and hits their unique blend of psychedelia out the park. Flamingods have managed to channel these influences, whilst adding a fresh swagger to effortlessly create one of their most immediate songs yet.

‘Paradise Drive’ is the second track Flamingods have revealed from new album ‘Levitation,’ 3 May via Moshi Moshi Records and comes hot on the heels of the multi-sensory psych-rock trip of ‘Marigold’ giving us a tantalising glimpse of at what is set to be one of the most hair raising releases of 2019. The album builds on their formidable influences to apply a vision soaked in mysticism, positivity and sun-drenched imagery.

Over the last few years, western ultra-conservatives have successfully rebranded as the 'alt-right,' positioning themselves as the counterculture alternative to the so-called liberal mainstream. Their goal is to win people over by making it seem as though their racist, sexist, homophobic and xenophobic posturing is actually about freedom of speech, presumably because that sounds more appealing than what it actually is: retrograde white nationalism. Not content with lurking in the dark corners of the internet, they are doing everything they can to infiltrate popular culture, and synthwave is no exception: the appearance of the subgenres of fashwave and trumpwave should serve as a warning to all of us.

While it is true that a certain wistful attitude toward the 1980s is inherent to synthwave, this has more to do with that decade's vision of itself and the future as rendered in the films and music of the time than it does with what life was actually like back then, especially as global capitalism has made attaining those dreams practically impossible. But these conservative extremists long for their 'lost' privilege and impunity, for such leaders as Ronald Regan and Margaret Thatcher, who incidentally did more to lower living standards in the west than PC culture ever could.

In light of this, we decided to make a statement about where we stand in regard to the current political climate. It's a rallying cry for anyone on our side of the fence and a guarantee that our music will never be co-opted by bigots, whatever they might call themselves.
